At this stage, however, it is reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that caution is warranted,\u201d Baker wrote during a discussion among top officials at Twitter about the decision to limit the reach of the story under the site\u2019s \u201chacked materials\u201d policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some facts that indicate the materials may have been hacked, while there are others indicating that the computer was either abandoned and-or the owner consented to allow the repair shop to access it for at least some purposes,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe simply need more information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">28. To which former Deputy General Counsel Jim Baker again seems to advise staying the non-course, because \u201ccaution is warranted\u201d: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tg4D0gLWI6\">pic.twitter.com\/tg4D0gLWI6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1598836516553641989?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>No time stamp was given for this particular message, but it appears to have been sent soon after Twitter initially clamped down on its users\u2019 ability to share the Post\u2019s story about the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>According to Taibbi, the decision to crack down on the reporting \u201cwas made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with former head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role.\u201d The journalist also described Baker as the \u201cformer\u201d deputy general counsel at Twitter, although Baker\u2019s own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thejimbaker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter biography<\/a>\u00a0still states he holds the role.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/14\/email-reveals-how-hunter-biden-introduced-ukrainian-biz-man-to-dad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post said it obtained a copy<\/a> of the laptop\u2019s hard drive from Rudy Giuliani after Trump ally Steve Bannon notified the publication of the laptop\u2019s existence. The laptop had been seemingly abandoned at a repair shop in Delaware, and the owner of the shop shared it Giuliani\u2019s lawyer, Robert Costello.<\/p>\n<p>Baker served as general counsel at the FBI from 2014 to December 2017, when he was reassigned by FBI Director Christopher Wray, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/fbis-top-lawyer-said-to-be-reassigned\/2017\/12\/21\/2ac76640-e6b5-11e7-833f-155031558ff4_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Baker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/01\/15\/fbi-general-counsel-criminal-investigation-1101774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came under criminal investigation<\/a> in 2017 over allegations that he made unauthorized leaks to the media, but the probe ended that same year with no charges.
