Anderson, a clinical psychologist of 40 years who identifies as transgender, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2021\/11\/24\/trans-kids-therapy-psychologist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outspoken<\/a> about a concern for the surge in cases of adolescent gender dysphoria. Now, Anderson has joined a legal effort to counter the disturbing trend of school policies designed to conceal a student\u2019s chosen trans-identity from their parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an ally and licensed psychologist with over 40 years of experience, I have seen hundreds of children and adolescents for gender-identity-related issues \u2014 many of whom transition, with my guidance and support,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/will-law.org\/will-amicus-lawsuit-against-montgomery-co-maryland-schools-over-adolescent-gender-identity-policy-usurping-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Anderson. \u201cBut a transition is a major event in a youth\u2019s life, and parents must be involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Institute for Law &#038; Liberty (WILL) filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/will-law.org\/will-amicus-lawsuit-against-montgomery-co-maryland-schools-over-adolescent-gender-identity-policy-usurping-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amicus brief<\/a> on Anderson\u2019s behalf last week that urges the federal court of appeals to reverse a District Court decision that excludes parents from \u201csignificant decisions affecting their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/08\/20\/gender-transition-identity-montgomery-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a>, by Judge Paul W. Grimm, dismissed a complaint against the Montgomery County school board by parents who alleged that the district\u2019s \u201cgender identity\u201d guidelines violated their state and constitutional rights. According to the guidelines, teachers are permitted to socially transition students to a \u201cgender identity\u201d different from their biological sex at school, without their parents\u2019 consent or knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The parents, who filed the lawsuit anonymously in 2020 against the Montgomery County Board of Education (MCBE), argued that the guidelines violated their right under the 14th Amendment \u201cto direct the care, custody, education, and control of their minor children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MCBE issued their \u201c2020-2021 Guidelines for Student Gender Identity,\u201d which advised schools in their district to develop a \u201cgender-support plan\u201d with students using an intake form that, according to the filing, would be kept confidential if the family was not supportive of their child\u2019s desire to adopt a new \u201cgender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs argued that the new guidelines interfered with their parental rights \u201cin a pivotal decision\u201d in their children\u2019s lives, which enabled school personnel to allow children \u201cto transition socially to a different gender identity at school\u201d without their consent.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/trans-psychologist-files-brief-md-school-district-hiding-transitions-parents-terrible-idea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Fox News Digital that families should never be excluded from important decisions regarding their child\u2019s health. \u201cIt\u2019s well established that one of the most important factors in helping gender-questioning children is family support,\u201d said Anderson. \u201cSo to deliberately deprive a child of support at a time potentially when they most need it is, I think, a serious error in judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson is the former President of the U.S. Professional Association for Transgender Health (USPATH) and former board member for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), but <a href=\"https:\/\/quillette.com\/2022\/01\/06\/a-transgender-pioneer-explains-why-she-stepped-down-from-uspath-and-wpath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resigned<\/a> in 2021 after no longer being able to support the direction they were headed. The leading transgender health authorities had issued a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jokestress\/status\/1447964908088283138?s=20&#038;t=_qDwZ_G15-DuKTeiXf5Qgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> in 2021 denouncing any form of discussion on medical transition for trans-identifying youth that wasn\u2019t conducted by \u201cexperts and stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson submitted an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2021\/11\/24\/trans-kids-therapy-psychologist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">op-ed<\/a> that was rejected by The New York Times, but published in The Washington Post, critical of the widely adopted \u201cgender-affirming\u201d model of care for adolescents. \u201cGender-affirming\u201d care <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/142\/4\/e20182162\/37381\/Ensuring-Comprehensive-Care-and-Support-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discourages<\/a> medical professionals from questioning a minor\u2019s self-reported transgender identity or exploring possible underlying factors that may be causing their dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>In a Quillette <a href=\"https:\/\/quillette.com\/2022\/01\/06\/a-transgender-pioneer-explains-why-she-stepped-down-from-uspath-and-wpath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>, Anderson noted reading Abigail Shrier\u2019s book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/store.dailywire.com\/collections\/books\/products\/irreversible-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters<\/a>,\u201d and shared the author\u2019s concerns about the explosion of adolescent girls identifying as transgender and seeking to medically transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main criticism of me is that many in the trans community regard Abigail Shrier as anathema, as a critic of appropriate trans care,\u201d Anderson told Quillette. \u201cI think that\u2019s an inaccurate reading of what she\u2019s written. And I think that it\u2019s a distortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases, [transgender people] believe that our job as a community is to protect the children from their parents,\u201d Anderson told Fox News Digital. \u201cI think that\u2019s very misguided. I think our job is to support kids to be supported by their families. Deceiving your parents is not a way to get their support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools transitioning children, often without their parents\u2019 knowledge, is becoming increasingly common. Many schools now provide students with individualized \u201cgender support plans\u201d that ask the student to indicate if they would like their parents to be kept in the dark. Some schools even provide \u201ctransition closets\u201d so that students can change into clothes that match their \u201cgender identity\u201d at school, and change back before heading home.<\/p>\n<p>But while social transition is often portrayed as a benign way to allow children to express their \u201ctrue selves,\u201d there are good reasons to doubt this narrative.
