The probe was prompted after an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221117165438\/https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/09\/26\/trans-charity-faces-watchdog-scrutiny-amid-child-chest-binding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> by The Telegraph found that Mermaids had been discreetly sending potentially dangerous \u201cbreast binders\u201d to children as young as 13 and 14 against their parents\u2019 wishes. Breast binding, the act of flattening the chest through constrictive materials, can cause breathing difficulties, chronic back pain, changes to the spine, and even broken ribs.<\/p>\n<p>The transgender charity also faced intense public scrutiny when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/09\/30\/trans-charity-mermaids-helps-teenagers-change-name-secret\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that staff with no medical training were advising adolescents as young as 13 that puberty blocking drugs were safe and \u201ctotally reversible,\u201d despite evidence to the contrary. Additionally, Mermaids faced backlash for offering to help 16-year-olds change their name without their parents\u2019 knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has seen a vast turnaround of their approach to treating minors who identify as transgender.
