While many people think a lump in the breast is the only symptom to watch for, the disease can manifest in other, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/skin-rash-breast-cancer-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">perhaps surprising<\/a>, ways. The <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bcrf.org\/blog\/breast-cancer-elderly-treating-growing-patient-population\/\" target=\"_blank\">median age of a breast cancer diagnosis<\/a> is 62, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), but the disease can occur at any age\u2014as with actor <strong>Christina Applegate<\/strong>, who made headlines in 2008 when she announced her diagnosis at the age of 36.<\/p>\n<p>The disease is also much more common than many people realize. &#8220;In 2020, there were 2.3 million women <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/breast-cancer\" target=\"_blank\">diagnosed with breast cancer<\/a> and 685,000 deaths globally,&#8221; the World Health Organization reported, calling it &#8220;the world&#8217;s most prevalent cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mortality rate of breast cancer varies according to different factors, but &#8220;advances in diagnosing and treating [breast] cancer have led to steadily improving survival rates, so the outlook for women diagnosed today <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/guide\/breast-cancer-survival-rates\" target=\"_blank\">is likely better<\/a>,&#8221; WebMD says. And a new study has found that breast cancer survivors can slash reduce their mortality risk by 60 percent by adding one thing to their daily routine. Boughey<\/strong>, MD told the Mayo Clinic. She recommended speaking to your doctor about genetic testing if you have breast cancer or other cancers in your family&#8217;s history. &#8220;Still, the majority of people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease,&#8221; she emphasized. In fact, BreastCancer.org says only five to 10 percent of breast cancers are believed <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/facts-statistics\/myths-vs-facts#section-myth-if-i-dont-have-a-family-history-of-breast-cancer-i-wont-get-it\" target=\"_blank\">to be hereditary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What are the other risk factors for the disease? &#8220;Researchers have identified hormonal, lifestyle, and environmental factors that may increase your risk <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/news-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\">of breast cancer<\/a>,&#8221; Boughey explained. &#8220;But it&#8217;s not clear why some people who have no risk factors develop cancer, yet other people with risk factors never do. says the Cleveland Clinic. &#8220;When this happens, it&#8217;s called metastasis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Men can get breast cancer, but the Cleveland Clinic explains that this is rare. &#8220;Approximately 2,600 men develop\u00a0male breast cancer every year in the United States, making up less than one percent of all cases,&#8221; says the site.<\/p>\n<p>The warning signs of breast cancer can vary, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/basic_info\/symptoms.htm\" target=\"_blank\">symptoms can include<\/a> a lump in the breast or underarm; the American Cancer Society explains, noting that women who are overweight can often have higher levels of insulin, a condition which is also linked to breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>One <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003950\" target=\"_blank\">recent study<\/a> revealed that drinking <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/news-diet-soda-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\">some diet sodas<\/a> can spike the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer. according to an article published by <em>The Journal of Clinical Oncology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And a new study has found that &#8220;moderate to high levels of physical activity\u2014equal to about <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/15-minutes-of-physical-activity-may-reduce-breast-cancer-mortality-by-60\" target=\"_blank\">15 minutes a day<\/a>\u2014reduced mortality by 60 percent in breast cancer survivors,&#8221; the National Cancer Institute says.<span aria-hidden=\"true\">ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reina Haque<\/strong>, MD, senior author of a new study published in <em>JAMA Network<\/em>, told <em>Medical News Today<\/em> that &#8220;The study found that even moderate physical activity was associated with a 60 percent <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2798622?utm_source=For_The_Media&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_campaign=ftm_links&#038;utm_term=111722\" target=\"_blank\">lower risk of death<\/a> among breast cancer survivors, and results were similar for breast cancer survivors who were more active.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Effective exercise does not need to be strenuous, Haque emphasized. &#8220;Our study shows that breast cancer survivors who exercise at moderate levels, such as <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/walking-quickly-lowers-disease-risk-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">walking every day<\/a> for more than 15 minutes, may experience the same survival benefits as those who do more strenuous exercise,&#8221;
