In the water utility industry, Henifin has been <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.waterfm.com\/articles\/thinking-regionally-thinking-big-2021-wf-m-award-winner-ted-henifin\">compared to Elon Musk<\/a> for his innovation in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Lumumba welcomed the decision, adding that Henifin has already been instrumental in efforts to get the system back online<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement allows us to work collaboratively with someone we trust to make smart choices for the city\u2019s drinking water system and ensure that we can provide safe,\u00a0clean and sustainable drinking water for all,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonms.gov\/statement-from-mayor-lumumba-on-water-system-agreement\/\">Lumumba said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lumumba, a Democrat, and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) have blamed racism, climate change, and Republican Gov. Tate Reeves for the water crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves has denied the allegation that his administration withheld funds and pointed to city mismanagement as the cause of the crisis.<\/p>\n<h2>Governor Praises \u2018Excellent News\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In a Nov. 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/897699c3b6c6\/governor-tate-reeves-water-crisis-statement?e=abdf4c75d7\">press release<\/a>, Reeves celebrated the DOJ\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is excellent news for anyone who cares about the people of Jackson that the Mayor will no longer be overseeing the city\u2019s water system,\u201d Reeves said. \u201cIt is now out of the city\u2019s control and will be overseen by a federal court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reeves said it\u2019s been \u201ca chaotic series of months,\u201d during which the state assumed responsibility for the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people on the ground who rushed to help were floored by the negligence,\u201d Reeves said. \u201cThey did heroic work to fix so many broken things and support the frontline city workers who had been abandoned. We committed millions of dollars from taxpayers across Mississippi to solve this crisis of incompetence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 22, Reeves ended the state of emergency he issued in August after a \u201cnearly month-long boil water alert in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 29, the DOJ announced it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/united-states-files-complaint-and-reaches-agreement-proposal-city-jackson-and-state\">filed a complaint<\/a> on behalf of the EPA against the city of Jackson alleging that the city failed to provide drinking water to residents\u00a0in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that providers of drinking water comply with federal and state laws designed to ensure the safety of the water,\u201d said U.S. Attorney\u00a0Darren J. LaMarca for the Southern District of Mississippi. \u201cThrough this litigation, we will act to ensure that the city of Jackson\u2019s water system will be compliant with the Safe Drinking Water Act and other state and local regulations so that those serviced by the system can have confidence that the water they are consuming is safe.
