That was enough for some critics to label Burton a racist, despite the fact that the lead actress, Jenna Ortega, is Hispanic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong\u2026I love Jenna Ortega and that she\u2019s playing Wednesday but one thing I hate about this show is that why did they make ALL the black people in this show terrible people?\u201d a viewer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11491019\/Woke-mob-slams-Tim-Burtons-Netflix-series-Wednesday-casting-black-actors-bullies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carped<\/a>. \u201cLike how did Netflix see nothing wrong with this? I hate Tim Burton\u2019s racist self.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another social media user piped up, \u201c\u2019Tim Burton casts black people finally and makes them pilgrim villains. Y\u2019all can\u2019t tell me that man isn\u2019t insufferable and racist as hell in real life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is the Black girl in Wednesday\u2019s school an aggressive bully tho? hmmm Tim Burton is a known racist\u2026.. no surprises there\u2026..\u201d a third critic chimed in.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing people who slammed his 2016 film \u201cMiss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children\u201d for its lack of diversity, Burton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/186641-tim-burton-explains-why-miss-peregrines-home-for-peculiar-children-features-a-predominantly-white-cast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a>, \u201cNowadays, people are talking about it more. \u2026 things either call for things, or they don\u2019t. I remember back when I was a child watching\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Brady<\/em>\u00a0<em>Bunch<\/em>\u00a0and they started to get all politically correct. Like, OK, let\u2019s have an Asian child and a black. I used to get more offended by that than just\u2026 I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that\u2019s great. I didn\u2019t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actor Samuel Jackson, who appears in the film, stated, \u201cI had to go back in my head and go, how many black characters have been in Tim Burton movies? And I may have been the first, I don\u2019t know, or the most prominent in that particular way, but it happens the way it happens. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s any fault of his or his method of storytelling, it\u2019s just how it\u2019s played out. Tim\u2019s a really great\u00a0guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWednesday\u201d has summoned a new record for Netflix.
