(STRF\/STAR MAX\/IPx 2021 via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI did not\u00a0take this decision lightly,\u201d Xu insisted. \u201cWe have and will continue to reduce our non-headcount operating expenses, but that alone wouldn\u2019t close the gap. This hard reality ultimately led me to make this painful decision to reduce our team size.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The move to lay off employees was driven by tapering growth and previous overhiring, the CEO said, noting that \u201cprior to\u00a0COVID-19, DoorDash was actually undersized as a company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic presented sudden and unprecedented opportunities to serve the evolving needs of merchants, consumers and Dashers,\u201d Xu said. \u201cWe sped up our hiring to catch up with our growth and started many new businesses in response to feedback from our audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DoorDash CEO went on to say that while \u201cmost of our\u00a0investments are paying off,\u201d the company was \u201cnot as rigorous as we should have been in managing our team growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">\u201cThat\u2019s on me,\u201d Xu said. \u201cAs a result, operating expenses grew quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Employees impacted by this decision will receive 17 weeks\u00a0of severance, and all\u00a0health benefits will continue through March 31, 2023, the CEO noted. As for overseas or visa-sponsored employees who have been terminated, they will be laid off on March 1 in order to give those with visa\u00a0applications \u201cas much time as possible to find a new job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DoorDash is just the latest among a slew of tech companies that have recently laid off employees.
