During that election cycle, he gave millions of dollars to then-presidential candidate Joe Biden as well as other Democrats. In an interview (pre-FTX collapse) titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/sam-bankman-fried-wants-to-save-the-world\/id1602541473?i=1000563436178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sam Bankman-Fried Wants to Save the World<\/a>,\u201d the then-billionaire said he would give between $100 million and $1 billion in the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried is following in the footsteps of his mother, Stanford professor and Democratic activist Barbara Fried, who is the founder and president of the Silicon Valley-based leftist super PAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/mind-the-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mind the Gap<\/a>. Mind the Gap was founded in 2018 to help progressive candidates win elections and funnel private donations to the Democratic Party. The group advises its ultra-left-wing (and ultra-rich) donors to fund 501(c)(3) voter registration\u00a0nonprofits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-charity-voter-registration-scheme-tax-exemption-soros-democracy-philanthropy-501c3-georgia-11663883529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">because<\/a> \u201cthey are 2 to 5 times more cost-effective at netting additional Democratic votes\u201d than advertising. <\/p>\n<p>During the 2020 election, Mind the Gap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/1\/7\/21055340\/mind-the-gap-silicon-valley-donors-democrats-2020-plan-140-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> donors to give to three separate voter registration groups: the Voter Participation Center (VPC), the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/center-for-voter-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Center for Voter Information (CVI)<\/a>,\u00a0and Everybody Votes (EV). In September 2020 alone, VPC and CVI sent out 7.1 million voter registration applications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/a-nonprofit-with-ties-to-democrats-is-sending-out-millions-of-ballot-applications-election-officials-wish-it-would-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by mail<\/a> largely to demographic groups that lean Democratic, while Everybody Votes worked to help register Democrat voters in key swing states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt\u00a0<em>current<\/em>\u00a0funding levels, the VPC, CVI, and EV programs together will be the largest voter registration drive in US history.\u00a0<em>Fully<\/em>\u00a0funded, they are projected to add roughly 3,000,000 people to the voter rolls, chiefly from communities of color, and yield 750,000 additional net votes in the November 2020 election in competitive battleground states across the country,\u201d reads a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/442063688\/Mind-the-Gap-s-memo-to-prospective-donors#from_embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memo<\/a> from Mind the Gap.\u201cHistorical data suggest that 40-50% of these new voters will go on to vote in the 2022 elections without any additional campaign or [get-out-the-vote] encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, because these donations are tax-deductible, funding such nonprofits is \u201c4 to 10 times more cost-effective than the next best alternative,\u201d the memo reads. Mind the Gap donors can simply write off these donations as \u201cphilanthropy\u201d on their taxes, even though they\u2019re funding explicitly partisan get-out-the-vote efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Where does Bankman-Fried come into all this? While it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outside-spending\/donor_detail\/2022?id=U0000004705&#038;type=I&#038;super_only=N&#038;name=Bankman-Fried%2C+Sam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appears<\/a> the 30-year-old avoided pouring money into his mother\u2019s super PAC for the 2022 cycle, his former employee, Nishad Singh, was Mind the Gap\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/mind-the-gap\/C00683649\/donors\/2022?page_length=25&#038;start=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top donor for 2022<\/a>.
