Photo via San Diego Web Cam used with permission<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>This post has been updated with a statement from Expeditionary Strike Group 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amphibious assault ship USS<em> Tripoli<\/em> (LHA-7) returned home on Tuesday following a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific, the Navy announced. <span id=\"more-99249\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The America-class amphib pulled into its homeport of Naval Base San Diego, Calif., Tuesday morning local time.<\/p>\n<p>The ship quietly left for its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/05\/02\/uss-tripoli-quietly-leaves-on-maiden-deployment\">maiden deployment<\/a> in May and spent the first few months testing out the \u201clightning carrier\u201d or \u201cassault carrier\u201d concept with U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters aboard.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96273\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7335372-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96273\" data-attachment-id=\"96273\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/08\/01\/carrier-uss-ronald-reagan-two-f-35b-big-decks-operating-near-taiwan-as-pelosi-arrives-in-singapore-china-renews-threats\/tripolis-co-on-the-flight-deck\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7335372-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"5472,3648\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{\" aperture \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-96273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Capt. US Navy Photo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Marine Corps embarked 16 F-35Bs aboard Tripoli, which flew missions in support of exercises Valiant Shield 22 and Noble Fusion,\u201d according to a Tuesday release from Expeditionary Strike Group 3.<br \/>\u201cOverall, the crew completed 2,052 hours of flight operations and traveled 40,303 nautical miles during exercise support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That testing evaluated how a big-deck amphibious warship can work with a carrier strike group, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/10\/16\/assault-carrier-tests-show-how-marine-f-35bs-can-operate-with-navy-aircraft-carriers-says-7th-fleet-commander\">USNI News previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day you can have F-35Bs on the flight deck, the next day you could have MV-22s and you can be putting Marines ashore. And so it just is a very versatile instrument and the fact that you have 14 5th-gen fighters on board \u2013 it\u2019s an incredibly capable sensor,\u201d U.S. 7th Fleet commander Vice Adm. Karl Thomas said in October of the concept and testing. \u201cAnd so we\u2019re still in the experimentation phase. We wanted to at least try to find out how would you integrate an assault carrier with a full-sized carrier. What missions might it be able to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During <em>Tripoli<\/em>\u2018s time in the Indo-Pacific, it drilled with aircraft carriers USS\u00a0<em>Abraham Lincoln<\/em>\u00a0(CVN-72) and USS\u00a0<em>Ronald Reagan<\/em> (CVN-76) for the Valiant Shield exercise in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we found is we distributed our three large decks for a period of time,\u201d Thomas said of the June exercise.<br \/>\u201cThere\u2019s mission sets that I think that it\u2019ll be designed for. I think that there are regions where it can operate in a better capacity. And then I think that because of the vertical takeoff nature of the F-35, you can find yourself putting F-35s in [Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations] and maybe bring them back out to the ship for some maintenance and you move them elsewhere,\u201d he continued. \u201cMaybe you latch them up with the carrier and you use the command and control of the electronic countermeasure capability of the [E2-D Advanced Hawkeye and the EA-18G Growlers]. So we\u2019re still in the experiment phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the F-35B testing during Valiant Shield, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit came aboard <em>Tripoli<\/em> at the end of July.
