Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), after serving in the Indiana state House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike Braun has filed his paperwork to run for governor and will be making an official announcement of his candidacy very soon,\u201d Josh Kelley, Braun\u2019s chief of staff, said in a Nov. 30 statement to several news outlets, confirming his decision to run for governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat filing did occur yesterday,\u201d Braun told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/11\/30\/braun-to-run-for-indiana-governor-opening-senate-seat-in-2024-00071339\">Politico<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ll talk to you down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several Republicans, including former Mike Pence aide Eric Doden, have announced they will run for governor; current Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb is term-limited in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/22\/mike-braun-likely-running-for-indiana-governor-in-2024-00058350\">Politico interview<\/a> in September, Braun indicated that he would run for governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll make a formal announcement somewhere probably late November, early December,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Braun was among several Republican senators who voted for\u00a0Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), the head of the Senate GOP campaign arm, over Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in November.<\/p>\n<p>Scott had criticized McConnell, who was ultimately reelected, over what he said were poor strategic decisions on part of the longtime GOP leader. Republicans were unable to retake a majority in the Senate during the Nov. 8 midterms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re generating the results politically or governmentally,\u201d Braun told reporters as he confirmed he favored Scott. \u201cWe don\u2019t have an agenda. We don\u2019t have a business plan. He will spend the holidays discussing with his wife, family, and friends around the state how he can best serve Indiana,\u201d a spokesperson for Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), the head of the House Republican Study Committee,\u00a0told <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3756247-gop-sen-mike-braun-will-run-for-indiana-governor\/\">The Hill<\/a> on Nov. 30 after Braun\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Unnamed sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/23\/hoosier-free-for-all-spartz-eyes-senate-run-in-2024-as-braun-pursues-gov-race-00058598\">told Politico<\/a> in September that Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), a Ukrainian-born first-term House lawmaker, may consider running for the Senate seat. However, Spartz and her team haven\u2019t publicly commented on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Doden, the former head of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., has been running for governor since early 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/05\/06\/eric-doden-former-iedc-president-announces-campaign-indiana-governor\/4971403001\/\">according<\/a> to local media. He has emphasized his role in the administration of then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who was later elected vice president under Trump.<\/p>\n<p>As for Democrats, it\u2019s unclear who might challenge Braun and the other possible Republican candidates in the 2024 Senate race.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, who control Indiana\u2019s governor\u2019s office and state Legislature, have dominated Indiana\u2019s elections in recent years. Trump bested Joe Biden by more than 16 percentage points during the 2020 election, and Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) easily won a second term in the Nov. 8 midterms over Democrat Thomas McDermott Jr.<\/p>\n<p>There was early speculation that Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, a Democrat, would launch a Senate bid. However,\u00a0Hogsett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibj.com\/articles\/mayor-joe-hogsett-expected-to-announce-re\">announced<\/a>\u00a0this month that he is seeking a third term as mayor of Indiana\u2019s largest city and capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-11\">Meanwhile, Democrats will face a daunting task in holding onto their majority in the 2024 elections, when they will be defending 21 seats to the Republicans\u2019 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-12\">Two of those seats are in Republican-leaning states West Virginia and Montana. Another five are in the swing states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Arizona, all of which will be in play during the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-12\">Currently, Democrats have a 50\u201349 majority in the Senate with Georgia\u2019s runoff election scheduled for Dec. 6 between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and Republican candidate Herschel Walker.
