The actual number of minors receiving treatment for gender dysphoria in Australia is estimated to be much higher, as this figure does not include children treated in private practice.<\/p>\n<p>Puberty blocker prescriptions in Australia peaked in 2019, with 624 minors receiving the drug, up 12,380% from 2014 when only 5 children were prescribed blockers. This number reduced to 198 in 2021, which the Daily Telegraph speculated was \u201cpossibly due to COVID lockdowns.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, 204 adolescents were prescribed cross-sex hormones from pediatric gender clinics, a 656% rise from the 27 minors prescribed hormones in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dianna Kenny, an Australian psychologist and retired Professor of Psychology at the University of Sydney, said the data obtained from the FOI request was likely a \u201cgross underestimate\u201d of the number of minors who are being socially and medically transitioned in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese numbers show a trend and that is upwards,\u201d said Dr. Kenny. \u201cThey don\u2019t include figures from the private sector, where there\u2019s been an explosion of private practitioners prescribing puberty blockers or cross sex hormones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victoria and Queensland, both densely populated states in Australia, have seen the highest growth in pediatric gender clinic referrals. In 2021, 1,120 children were enrolled in public clinics in Victoria, and 635 in Queensland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kenny has been an outspoken critic of \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care, which <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/142\/4\/e20182162\/37381\/Ensuring-Comprehensive-Care-and-Support-for\">discourages<\/a> medical professionals from questioning a minor\u2019s self-reported transgender identity or exploring possible underlying factors that may be causing their dysphoria. She believes social media has led to the explosion of adolescent females adopting a transgender identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sZbEsaJMvRU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode<\/a> of the YouTube podcast \u201cTERF Talk Down Under,\u201d Dr. Kenny equated surgically removing the breasts of teenage girls to medical malpractice.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Morris, the president of the National Association of Practicing Psychiatrists, has <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iEU00Ks1Qms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> for a \u201cproper inquiry\u201d into how to treat Australian children with gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe magnitude of the effects on a young person\u2019s life, especially children and adolescents, is huge,\u201d Dr. Morris said. \u201cIt involves ongoing medical treatment for the rest of their lives, loss of their fertility and sexual responsiveness. It\u2019s absolutely essential to have a proper strategy as is happening in the UK, Sweden and Finland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After conducting systematic reviews of the evidence for the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in treating pediatric gender dysphoria, health authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/segm.org\/segm-summary-sweden-prioritizes-therapy-curbs-hormones-for-gender-dysphoric-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/genderreport.ca\/finland-strict-guidelines-for-treating-gender-dysphoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/englands-national-health-service-abandons-gender-affirming-model-of-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a> have decided to abandon the \u201cgender-affirming\u201d model, finding the costs far outweigh the benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Eloise Brook, a <a href=\"https:\/\/joy.org.au\/wordforword\/2015\/06\/call-me-eloise-trans-activist-eloise-brook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transgender activist<\/a> and board member of The Gender Centre in Sydney, revealed the clinic saw 347 children with gender dysphoria in 2021-2022, and believes the number will only increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the science we provided the appropriate care,\u201d Brook said. \u201cWe are a frontline service. We help families, hold them together and make sure their kids stay alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brook, citing the debunked \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realityslaststand.com\/p\/pediatric-gender-medicine-and-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affirm-or-suicide<\/a>\u201d narrative, said that failing to affirm a child\u2019s chosen identity will drive them to commit suicide. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else is utterly unacceptable and barbaric,\u201d said Brook. \u201cThis disingenuous argument that trans kids are not trans, it kills these kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brook is a strong proponent of the affirmative approach, which is also recommended by The Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH), an offshoot of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), an organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-declaration-launches-opposition-to-leading-transgender-health-association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denounced<\/a> internationally by medical and mental health professionals for its \u201cadherence to ideological views unsupported by evidence, its exclusion of ethical concerns, and its mischaracterization of basic science.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of Australian adolescents referred to pediatric gender clinics has \u201cskyrocketed\u201d in recent years, according to a Daily Telegraph investigation.
