The company had increased hiring over the past three years as lockdowns presented \u201csudden and unprecedented opportunities\u201d for food delivery services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of our investments are paying off, and while we\u2019ve always been disciplined in how we have managed our business and operational metrics, we were not as rigorous as we should have been in managing our team growth,\u201d Xu wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s on me. As a result, operating expenses grew quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move to reduce headcount occurs weeks after DoorDash announced better-than-expected <a href=\"https:\/\/s22.q4cdn.com\/280253921\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/q3\/DASH-Q3-2022-Shareholder-Letter_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial results<\/a> for the third quarter of 2022. The company lost $0.77 per share even as total orders increased to 439 million, marking 27% growth from the third quarter of 2021. The company\u2019s stock has nevertheless fallen over 61% since the beginning of the year, even as the Dow Jones Industrial Index declined nearly 8% and the technology-heavy NASDAQ plummeted more than 30%.<\/p>\n<p>DoorDash dismissed approximately 1,250 individuals, who will receive 17 weeks of compensation, continued healthcare coverage and immigration support. The departing employees will also receive career transition services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur business fundamentals remain strong,\u201d Xu continued in the letter to employees. \u201cBut as I\u2019ve said before, what got us here won\u2019t necessarily bring us to the next stage and we have to tailor some of our tactics. Looking ahead, we\u2019re confident that we have reset the size and shape of our organization to match our strategic priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The startup is one of several technology companies to announce widespread dismissals in recent months. Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Tesla have announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/recession-fears-lead-big-tech-companies-to-pause-hiring-cut-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hiring pauses or layoffs<\/a> for their corporate offices, citing the probability of a prolonged contraction and broader economic uncertainty. Elon Musk, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-warns-a-severe-recession-will-be-more-likely-if-federal-reserve-doesnt-take-action-on-rate-hikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed<\/a> approximately two-thirds of employees at social media platform Twitter, said that the Federal Reserve is \u201cmassively amplifying the probability of a severe recession\u201d through the rollback of expansionary monetary policy and \u201cneeds to cut interest rates immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/entertainment-giants-and-media-companies-announce-massive-layoffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other sectors<\/a> have also reduced headcount in an effort to limit expenditures, Silicon Valley has been a particular target of criticism from investors who believe companies should prepare for a coming economic storm.
