New monks will be sent to the temple to continue its operation in the days ahead, Boonlert said.<\/p>\n<p>Another Thai monk named Phra Annipalo, 34, was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/29\/thai-monks-in-rehab-after-testing-positive-for-meth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> earlier this month on drug charges after allegedly carjacking two vehicles and fleeing from local police.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/oct\/10\/thai-pm-announces-crackdown-on-drugs-in-wake-of-nursery-attack\">spoke out<\/a> regarding drug use in the country after a former police officer who was dismissed over methamphetamine possession killed 37 people during a shooting at a nursery.<\/p>\n<p>At least 23 children were among those killed in the rampage. Some victims were as young as two years of age. The former officer later took his own life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">\u201cAfter inspecting the crime scene, we found that the perpetrator tried to break in and he mainly used a knife to commit the crime by killing a number of small children,\u201d said Police Chief Damrongsak Kittiprapat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-63155169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The prime minister \u201cordered provincial governors to strengthen drug prevention plans to tackle problems in their areas,\u201d a government spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/oct\/10\/thai-pm-announces-crackdown-on-drugs-in-wake-of-nursery-attack\">said<\/a> in a statement after the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand is a major crossroads for methamphetamine trafficking from the Golden Triangle, which encompasses Myanmar, Laos, and northern Thailand, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminal organizations have adapted and innovated, and it is impossible for countries to address transnational crime alone.\u201d UNODC Regional Representative Jeremy Douglas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/roseap\/2022\/05\/thailand-high-level-national-border-management-dialogue\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last two years, methamphetamine seizures in Southeast Asia have increased from 140 tons to close to 170 tons, and this trend is continuing \u2013 instability in the Golden Triangle and Shan State are contributing, and Thailand and Lao PDR need support for border control,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>More than one billion\u00a0methamphetamine tablets were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/frontpage\/2022\/June\/unodc-report_-over-one-billion-methamphetamine-tablets-seized-in-east-and-southeast-asia-in-2021-as-the-regional-drug-trade-continues-to-expand.html\">seized<\/a> in East and Southeast Asia in 2021, according to the agency, totaling 172 tons of the addictive substance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe total is seven times higher than it was 10 years ago, when just more than 143 million tablets were seized, and over thirty-five times higher than it was close to 20 years ago,\u201d UNODC stated in a June report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Buddhist temple in Thailand has been left without any monks after they tested positive for drugs and were defrocked, according to AFP.
