Zero. None. Not a single solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>With mass public shootings in just the last week in Colorado and Virginia, people naturally want to do something to stop these attacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>But semi-automatic guns provide critical self-defense benefits. After each shot, a semi-automatic gun reloads itself. A single-shot gun, by contrast, requires manual reloading. This can prove a liability, especially against multiple attackers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In places where they were allowed to carry, law-abiding citizens stopped\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/10\/massive-errors-in-fbis-active-shooting-reports-regarding-cases-where-civilians-stop-attacks-instead-of-4-4-the-correct-number-is-at-least-34-4-in-2021-it-is-at-least-49-1-excluding-gun-free-zon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 50%<\/a><span>\u00a0of shootings. The Virginia attack sadly took place in a gun-free zone (an employees\u2019 only section of the Walmart).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Biden\u2019s statement comes\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-trudeau-targets-hunters-with-gun-bill-changes-that-assault-canadian-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just a day<\/a><span>\u00a0after Justin Trudeau\u2019s government introduced new legislation to ban all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Neither leader seems to understand that armed, law-abiding citizens make it riskier for criminals to commit crime. But Biden never seemed to grasp the value of deterrence. He hasn\u2019t criticized the progressive prosecutors who refuse to prosecute violent criminals, the judges who have released large numbers of inmates from jails, or the bail reform measures that immediately put violent repeat criminals back on the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Biden\u2019s statement on guns is extreme. Over\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ssrn.com\/abstract=4279137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 million<\/a><span>\u00a0Americans have concealed handgun permits, and that\u2019s not counting the millions who legally carry without a permit in 24 states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The vast majority of handguns sold in this country are semi-automatic. In 2018,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/firearms\/docs\/report\/2020-firearms-commerce-report\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost 3.9 million<\/a><span>\u00a0semi-automatic handguns were manufactured in the U.S., compared to fewer than 700,000 revolvers. So, about 85 percent of all handguns made were semi-automatics. A similar percentage holds true for rifles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Biden\u2019s statement on Thursday implicated a far wider range of guns than the news media lets on. And this was no slip of the tongue from Biden.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Earlier this year in New York, Biden said of Glock handguns, \u201cI don\u2019t see any rationale to why there should be such a weapon able to be purchased.\u201d At a CNN town hall last year, he\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/07\/22\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-a-cnn-town-hall-with-don-lemon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a><span>, \u201cWhether it\u2019s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it\u2019s a rifle\u2014is ridiculous. I\u2019m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Biden held these views long before he became president. At a high-dollar private fundraiser in Seattle in 2019, he\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/speaking-at-the-house-of-amazon-joe-biden-gently-raises-companys-role-in-middle-class-job-losses\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a><span>, \u201cWhy should we allow people to have military-style weapons, including pistols with 9-mm bullets that can hold ten or more rounds?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Each time, the fact-checkers such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2021\/jul\/22\/national-house-republicans\/no-joe-biden-doesnt-want-ban-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politifact<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2021\/08\/25\/fact-check-biden-didnt-gift-taliban-weapons\/8197978002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a><span>\u00a0have used verbal gymnastics to try to dismiss the claim that Biden wants to ban all semi-automatic guns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>After the Nov. 20 Colorado nightclub shooting, Biden promised to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/11\/20\/statement-by-president-biden-on-the-deadly-shooting-in-colorado-springs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get weapons of war off America\u2019s streets<\/a><span>.\u201d But in July, the Associated Press\u2019s influential Stylebook finally\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APStylebook\/status\/1547309549488640000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a><span>\u00a0that terms such as \u201cassault weapon\u201d and \u201cweapons of war\u201d convey \u201clittle meaning\u201d and are \u201chighly politicized.\u201d The guns that Biden was talking about are \u201cdesigned for the civilian market\u201d and certainly not used by any militaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The much-maligned AR-15 functions exactly the same as any small caliber semi-automatic hunting rifle \u2013 firing the same bullets, with the same rapidity, and doing the same damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Semi-automatic guns are of course dangerous and make it easier to kill people. But they also enable people to protect themselves and others. When Biden says that he can\u2019t see \u201ca single, solitary rationale,\u201d he shows his ignorance of the importance of self-defense. Unlike Biden, the rest of us aren\u2019t guarded by an army of secret service agents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Before compromising our rights to self-defense, the burden should be on the government to prove a rationale for its gun control laws. Just last year, when Federal Judge Roger Benitez struck down California\u2019s \u201cassault weapon\u201d ban, he\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Miller_v_Bonta_Opinion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a><span>\u00a0that the state\u2019s experts, who summarized the existing research, could not provide any evidence that the prohibition actually reduced any type of violent crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>We need to fight back against mass shootings, not disarm ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><em>John R.
