November\u2019s figure is the lowest since July, and likely reflected an uptick in gas prices earlier this fall, said Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Gas prices have since reversed and fell to $3.52 a gallon, on average, nationwide on Tuesday, according to AAA. That\u2019s down from $3.76 a month ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">The data indicate Americans are taking a more gloomy view about the economy. Before the pandemic, the index regularly topped 120. With the cost of food, rent, clothing, and other essentials surging, inflation is near the worst in four decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-united-states-economy-business-consumer-prices-039d829b874be6237041e5f0ab032ad1\" class=\"paragraph-link\">increasing 7.7% in October from a year earlier<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-41 apnews_article_midarticle_1\">\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Despite the negative outlook, however, most Americans \u2014 particularly those with higher incomes \u2014 are still spending, fueling a generally healthy start to the winter holiday shopping season last weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">The business research group\u2019s present situation index \u2014 which measures consumers\u2019 assessment of current business and labor market conditions \u2014 dropped slightly to 137.4 from 138.7 in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">And the board\u2019s expectations index \u2014 a measure of consumers\u2019 six-month outlook for income, business and labor conditions &#8212; declined to 75.4 from 77.9 last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Still, Americans opened their <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-new-york-economy-business-e5c8e1bfd89c5eb7da7bd48ebd33d076\" class=\"paragraph-link\">wallets on Black Friday<\/a> and over the post-Thanksgiving weekend. Spending on Black Friday jumped 12% compared with a year ago, according to MasterCard Spending Pulse, though that figure is not adjusted for inflation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">And on so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-technology-health-prices-covid-b71d6c255573eff6c6f2eecb4318a689\" class=\"paragraph-link\">\u201cCyber Monday\u201d earlier this week<\/a> Americans boosted their online spending by 5.8% from a year earlier, Adobe Analytics said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Consumers may not be able to sustain solid spending growth for much longer. A rising number of households are stepping up their use of credit cards \u2014 or <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-technology-economy-113f3fc36a6af9e6d9dc919aa22ca276\" class=\"paragraph-link\">\u201cbuy now, pay later\u201d plans<\/a> \u2014 to keep up with higher prices. And many are also dipping into savings, which rose sharply \u2014 on average \u2014 during the pandemic, as government stimulus checks and the postponement of spending on travel and entertainment boosted the average American\u2019s bank account. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-41 apnews_article_midarticle_2\">\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Yet for lower-income households, those savings have largely been spent, though they may continue to fuel activity for higher-earning families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-46 p Component-p-0-2-37\">Rising consumer spending, even after adjusting for inflation, is expected to buoy the economy in the final three months of 2022.
