Maybe it would do so temporarily. But that\u2019s not the endgame.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re paying attention, you can see that the Senate\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1172\/vote_117_2_00356.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">62-37 vote for cloture<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/8404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HR 8404<\/a> puts us one step closer to abolishing state recognition of marriage entirely. That\u2019s where this train is headed.<\/p>\n<p>This will happen the same way such things always happen \u2014 through a demonization campaign that frames skeptics as bigots who are guilty of discrimination. That\u2019s how you get Democrat-pliable Republicans such as Mitt Romney and craven Supreme Court justices like Anthony Kennedy to sign on. That\u2019s how you manufacture a public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/1229439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opinion cascade<\/a>, warning average Americans that they\u2019ll be pummeled with lawsuits and ostracism if they dare think out loud.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s how Democrats in Congress are likely in the not-too-distant future \u2014 via HR 8404 \u2014 to make the case that marriage actually comes with privileges that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2014\/10\/29\/why-singles-rights-and-same-sex-marriage-will-abolish-all-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discriminate against the unmarried<\/a>. Disagree? You\u2019re a bigot who deserves to be socially ostracized! Self-censorship in the face of such accusations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weaponization-Loneliness-Tyrants-Isolation-Silence\/dp\/1637582021\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3VJCF5JDBB9K2&#038;keywords=weaponization+of+loneliness&#038;qid=1669663698&#038;sprefix=weaponiz%2Caps%2C138&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will pave the way, as always<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Collectivists Hope to Destroy Private Life and Regulate Relationships <\/p>\n<p>Once they\u2019ve gotten to that point via HR 8404 and Republicans who supported the measure, congressional Democrats will doubtless push us to agree that marriage is a discriminatory institution. We\u2019ll start seeing more anti-marriage initiatives supported by singles, millennials, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/life-julia-yuval-levin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julias<\/a>, and gen Z, all well-groomed for the moment by teachers unions, academia, and media.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll fall for the pitch that we can all just write up domestic partnership contracts instead. \u201cMarriage\u201d would then become nothing but a legal relationship (a contract) between two (or more) people for any purpose at all. Bureaucrats would broker those contracts. This proposal is all mapped out in Sunstein and Thaler\u2019s 2008 book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nudge-Improving-Decisions-Health-Happiness\/dp\/014311526X\/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1Z7C31HP4UGB7&#038;keywords=nudge+improving+decisions+about+health%2C+wealth+and+happiness&#038;qid=1669594925&#038;sprefix=nudge+%2Caps%2C129&#038;sr=8-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nudge<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s also been promoted for decades by internationally acclaimed feminist legal scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Autonomy-Myth-Theory-Dependency\/dp\/1565847601\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=311MRDB4Z1SFF&#038;keywords=martha+fineman+autonomy+myth&#038;qid=1669664128&#038;sprefix=martha+fineman+autonomy+myth%2Caps%2C103&#038;sr=8-1&#038;ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.08f69ac3-fd3d-4b88-bca2-8997e41410bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martha Fineman<\/a> who writes that a system of contracts replacing marriage will help the state \u201cregulate all social interactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under a system that abolishes state recognition of marriage, the family could no longer exist autonomously or unmolested by the state. How could it if the state no longer recognizes marriage as the foundation of the family unit? The government would have no requirement to recognize religious rites of marriage as valid. Thus, it would meddle more deeply in religion and religious communities that recognize bonds of kinship through blood ties.<\/p>\n<p> We Become Atomized Individuals in the State\u2019s Eyes <\/p>\n<p>The atomization resulting from this will have repercussions that go beyond the bill\u2019s guarantee to treat any difference of opinion as a federal crime. If we continue on this path, the government will no longer have to recognize any biological relationships. It need not recognize any legal right you might have as the parent of your biological child.
