Between actually electing Kathy Hochul to continue her reign of incoherence and incompetence, coupled with their already in-situ fashion plate, empty-suit city chief executive, Big Apple dwellers might as well save time and just beat themselves up.<\/p>\n<p>Emboldened by the election of state and local politicians, a NYC Council bill that had seemed doomed to ashes is experiencing a Phoenix-like rebirth. To his eternal shame, New York City mayor Eric Adams has signaled he is willing to sign it.<\/p>\n<p>What is Mayor Adams willing to sign? <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/26\/nyc-landlords-could-soon-be-denied-criminal-background-checks-for-tenants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THIS<\/a><\/em> abomination.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A controversial bill <em>prohibiting Big Apple landlords from performing criminal background checks<\/em> on prospective tenants \u2013 <em>even those <strong>convicted of murder and other heinous crimes<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 is on a fast track to becoming law.<\/p>\n<p>At least 30 of the City Council\u2019s 51 members have agreed to back the \u201cFair Chance for Housing Act,\u201d which is set to go before the Council\u2019s Committee on Civil Rights for its first public hearing on Dec. 8, records show.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Right before the election, the former Democratic mayor of Miami Philip Levine told Eric Adams he needed to step up, \u201cbutton down,\u201d and get serious about the crime and \u201cweak laws\u201d destroying his city. <\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Welp, NY Dems squeaked through, so no need to act as if that mattered anymore. Besides, the mayor has parties to go to and crime\/law stuff doesn\u2019t seem to be his forte. Neither does having a vested interest in the health, safety, and prosperity of the residents of his city. <\/p>\n<p>Occupying the oblivious-to-the-end category with the mayor, soon-to-be-<em>FORMER<\/em> Congressman Mondaire Jones spent some time <em>JUST YESTERDAY<\/em> pinging on the New York Times for amplifying\u2026 <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c\u2026the GOP\u2019s \u201cdoomsday-style\u201d <em><strong>disinformation<\/strong><\/em> campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is too little, too late from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@nytimes<\/a>, which amplified the GOP\u2019s \u201cdoomsday-style\u201d disinformation campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uPW7JSRJOO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/uPW7JSRJOO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mondaire Jones (@MondaireJones) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MondaireJones\/status\/1596993374258860034?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>WHUT<\/em>?! \u201cDoomsday disinformation\u201d? Perhaps that\u2019s why the Representative will no longer have a house seat come January (besides the fact, after being redistricted out of his seat \u2013 Sean Maloney took it *snicker* \u2013 he lost in a primary for the seat he tried to move to) \u2013 his grasp of what constitutes \u201cdisinformation\u201d is as fluid as any liberal\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>They couldn\u2019t refute a single crime statistic Zeldin and fellow Republicans ran on, largely successfully, in November. Facts are facts, regardless of Democratic insistence to the contrary. People know what they see every night on the local news and read in the local media. Voters do not appreciate being told their lying eyes do not see what they see plainly, especially as much of it happens in close proximity to them or loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>These politicians in all their appalling hubris obviously took <em>nothing<\/em> from the election. Not one single message was received that voters were desperately trying to send. Adams is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/nyc-bill-preventing-landlords-performing-criminal-background-checks-gains-traction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all in on stripping landlords<\/a> (and their existing tenants) of basic protections because of\u2026what? Empathy? Compassion?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026\u201dNo one should be denied housing because they were once engaged with the criminal justice system, plain and simple,\u201d a spokesperson for the mayor\u2019s office told Fox Business in a statement. \u201cWe will work closely with our partners in the City Council to ensure this bill has maximum intended impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Never underestimate the horrific \u201cmaximum impact\u201d potential of any liberal reform measure. It seems the mayor\u2019s empathy and compassion should be for his law-abiding, tax-paying citizens first, but I guess one doesn\u2019t score SJW points and invitations to swanky galas for taking care of mundane city business.<\/p>\n<p>There <em>are<\/em> some NYC council members who have the safety of their constituents in mind as opposed to coddling the criminal elements of the city\u2019s population. Councilwoman Inna Vernikov has been one of the most vocal in fighting the measure and trying to ensure public awareness of what the council is attempting to do.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What\u2019s on the menu this Thanksgiving? A bill which would prohibit landlords from conducting criminal background checks of potential tenants. Murdered someone? Beat up your girlfriend? Robbed? Stabbed your neighbor? No problem. Come live among us! How <em>dare<\/em> she harangue constituents on Thanksgiving! I wonder what the crime stats are like in his neighborhood?<\/p>\n<p>NYC\u2019s own public housing projects won\u2019t fall under this rule because they have to follow federal guidelines, which include criminal background checks as part of the application process. But there\u2019s another wrinkle in the bill. What <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/26\/nyc-landlords-could-soon-be-denied-criminal-background-checks-for-tenants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about sex offenders<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026The legislation also doesn\u2019t prohibit landlords from checking New York\u2019s sex offender registry to weed out pervs as prospective tenants. But the bill\u2019s current language leaves landlords <em>vulnerable to renting to people who committed sex crimes in other states<\/em> because out-of-state sex offender registries are not addressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Good grief. <\/p>\n<p>Vito Signorile, the spokesman for a 25,000-member rent-stabilization advocacy group, summed it up pretty well.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026He also said members <em>are getting an earful from existing tenants<\/em> who <em>want no part<\/em> of sharing buildings with violent or career ex-cons.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the <em>very least<\/em>, every last one of those tenants should be blowing the phones off the wall at every single council member\u2019s office.
