Mike Lee\u2019s (R-UT) religious liberty amendment, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/18\/en-mike-lee-on-respect-for-marriage-act-theres-still-time-we-can-stop-this-thing\/\">created<\/a> to keep the federal government from targeting or retaliating\u00a0against any person or group for adhering to sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions about marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Sens. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), who both voted on November 16 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/16\/112-senate-republicans-vote-with-democrats-for-far-left-respect-for-marriage-act\/\">advance<\/a> to same-sex marriage bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/11\/26\/second-key-gop-senator-announces-support-for-religious-freedom-amendment-to-respect-for-marriage-act\/\">told<\/a> the Daily Signal over the weekend that they would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/services\/files\/CB39DE23-EF22-4CDC-B645-BF756A5F94D1\">support<\/a> Lee\u2019s amendment. Lummis\u2019 spokeswoman Stacey Daniels told the publication on Saturday that the senator will support the Lee amendment if it is brought to the floor. While she did not directly answer whether she would insist on the amendment\u2019s adoption as a condition for supporting cloture, Lummis\u2019 team said she is \u201chopeful her colleagues will join her in supporting\u201d the measure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Likewise, Sullivan spokesman Mike Reynard told the publication on Friday that the senator supports both an amendment from Sen.\u00a0James Lankford (R-OK) and Lee, adding that Sullivan \u201chas been working hard to ensure that these amendments get votes on the Senate floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We still have time to protect religious liberty. We\u2019re asking our colleagues to support my amendment. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y7JXkxNXTZ\">pic.twitter.com\/y7JXkxNXTZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMikeLee\/status\/1594043506842017792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">Support from Sullivan and Lummis comes after Lee sent a letter last week to the 12 GOP senators who voted for the Respect for Marriage Act, asking them to reject the RFMA unless his amendment is added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cNo American should face legal harassment or retaliation from the federal government for holding sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions,\u201d he wrote in the letter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy amendment would ensure that federal bureaucrats do not take discriminatory actions against individuals, organizations, nonprofits, and other entities based on their sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions about marriage by prohibiting the denial or revocation of tax exempt status, licenses, contracts, benefits, etc.,\u201d the letter continues. \u201cIt would affirm that individuals still have the right to act according to their faith and deepest convictions even outside of their church or home.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">62-37: Senate advanced marriage equality legislation to protect same-sex and interracial marriage under federal law. 12 Republicans voted Yes: Blunt, Burr, Capito, Collins, Ernst, Lummis, Murkowski, Portman, Romney, Sullivan, Tillis and Young. 60 votes were needed. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nux07RpBZp\">pic.twitter.com\/nux07RpBZp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Craig Caplan (@CraigCaplan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CraigCaplan\/status\/1592987509273038848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The RFMA was introduced following the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, due to Democrats\u2019\u00a0unfounded concerns\u00a0that the Supreme Court could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/24\/fact-check-clarence-thomas-and-substantive-due-process\/\">use<\/a> the\u00a0<em>Dobbs<\/em>\u00a0decision to overrule the Court\u2019s\u00a0<em>Obergefell\u00a0<\/em>gay marriage decision<em>.\u00a0<\/em>The measure passed the House in July with the help of 47 Republicans, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) agreed to postpone a vote until after the midterms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Overall, the RFMA would repeal the Clinton-era Defense of Marriage Act and would require the federal government to\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/4556\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">recognize<\/a>\u00a0any marriage that was \u201cvalid in the place where entered into.\u201d The bill would additionally require every state to recognize every same-sex marriage that \u201cis valid in the State where the marriage was entered into.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The bill also has a \u201cprivate right of action\u201d clause, which would allow \u201cany person who is harmed by a violation of subsection (b)\u2026[to] bring a civil action in the appropriate district court of the United States against the person who violated such a subsection for declaratory and injunctive relief.\u201d Likewise, attorneys general would be able to bring civil action against any person who violates the law.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the lawmakers who support the RFMA say the legislation would protect liberty with the potential addition of a bipartisan amendment from Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), Rob Portman (R-OH), and Thom Tillis (R-NC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/congressional-record\/volume-168\/issue-176\/senate-section\/article\/S6699-5\">entitled<\/a>\u00a0\u201cNo Impact on Religious Liberty and Conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"deep-link\">\n<p>But religious liberty proponents say that amendment does nothing to shield Americans who have a traditional view of marriage from being targeted under the law.<\/p>\n<p>Heritage Action for America Executive Director Jessica Anderson released a statement saying RFMA is an \u201cunnecessary piece of legislation that provides for lawsuits against those who simply hold a different view on marriage.\u201d\u00a0Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said the bill \u201copens the door to American persecution.\u201d\u00a0Rev. Franklin Graham\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/26\/rev-franklin-graham-same-sex-marriage-bill-fails-protect-those-traditional-marriage-views\/\">called<\/a> the legislation\u2019s name a \u201csmoke screen,\u201d similar to the Inflation Reduction Act, which did nothing to reduce inflation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FranklinGraham\/posts\/688910959271168\" data-width=\"640\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/graph.facebook.com\/100044568093541\/posts\/688910959271168\/\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<p>The Respect for Marriage Act is coming before the Senate again on Monday. Instead, it elevates the rights of one group at the expense of another,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe religious protections in my amendment offer the best path toward achieving the civility necessary for a pluralistic society to thrive.
