It recounts how two long-overlooked pilots led a mission that turned the tide in the Korean War\u2019s most brutal battle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat entire war has been woefully forgotten,\u201d author Adam Makos told me in a phone interview. \u201cThe last major Korean War movie was \u2018Pork Chop Hill\u2019 starring Gregory Peck, released in 1959 \u2014 over 60 years ago. And Hollywood hasn\u2019t gone there since.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Diverse talent came together to produce \u201cDevotion.\u201d Actor Glen Powell, known for \u201cHidden Figures\u201d and recently as one of the \u201cTop Gun\u201d pilots, read the book and ultimately met real-life pilot Tom Hudner to secure the film rights prior to the decorated veteran\u2019s death in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s film director J.D. Dillard, whose father was only the second African American pilot in the Navy\u2019s Blue Angels squadron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dillard proved to be the ideal pick to helm the story of Hudner and Jesse Brown, the first black aviator in Naval history. Brown is played by actor Jonathan Majors, who will soon be seen in \u201cCreed III\u201d and multiple \u201cAvengers\u201d films as baddie Kang the Conqueror.<\/p>\n<p> When Authenticity Is Costly <\/p>\n<p>The author, who spent months with Hudner and Brown\u2019s family members for research, said interacting with them left him in awe even more so than meeting Hollywood stars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re to become better people as Americans, to grow as a country and culture, we have to remember our heroes,\u201d said Makos. \u201cA culture that forgets its heroes has no future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such a rare ethos of honor permeates the film \u2014 including with another key player, aerial coordinator Kevin LaRosa Jr., known for deploying the CineJet system on \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d for maximum in-flight realism. Here they took it a step further, restoring four authentic F4U Corsairs for their lead pilots to fly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Makos, who has also authored three books on key World War II figures, was thrilled. \u201cThe moment I saw those planes coming into the hangar, I knew we were going to have something very serious, real, and visceral,\u201d he said. \u201cThey could\u2019ve done one or two planes and the others digitally, but they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>He also points out that the visuals look so good some will assume it\u2019s all CGI. \u201cThat Corsair really is ripping down the river, with the prop tips at five feet above the waves. Sure, a little bit of CGI comes in from the scenery and the bullets being fired at him.
