Todd Young of Indiana, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Mitt Romney of Utah, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, and Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming strongly oppose the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Under this bill, religious organizations and business owners who do not submit to the government\u2019s attempts to dictate Americans\u2019 theology will be subject to legal scrutiny, endless lawsuits, and fines. Young, Ernst, Romney, Moore Capito, Lummis, and their seven other Republican colleagues who voted for the objectionable legislation were warned of its problems by legal scholars, legislators, and religious liberty groups including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/defending-marriage-will-senate-republicans-display-courage-uphold-truth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ryan T. Anderson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/marriage-and-family\/commentary\/fact-checking-7-claims-defenders-democrats-same-sex-marriage-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roger Severino<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/defending-marriage-will-senate-republicans-display-courage-uphold-truth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rep. Chip Roy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/11\/19\/mike-lee-urges-gop-senators-who-voted-for-respect-for-marriage-act-have-the-courage-to-protect-free-exercise-of-religion\/\">Sen. Mike Lee,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/u-s-senate-to-vote-on-respect-for-marriage-act-several-groups-say-its-unconstitutional\/article_268bf3d6-6db8-11ed-a7e3-c7adcf4de6a0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alliance Defending Freedom, and Liberty Counsel<\/a>. Regardless of those warnings, the GOP senators voted to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>That decision specifically doesn\u2019t sit well with the 70 percent of GOP voters and 73 percent of the conservative constituents in those states who say they object to the bill, which would embolden LGBT activists who regularly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/06\/the-never-ending-persecution-of-jack-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploit<\/a>\u00a0the legal system to target religious Americans such as Colorado cake artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/06\/the-never-ending-persecution-of-jack-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack Phillips<\/a>, Washington florist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/08\/after-supreme-court-refused-to-protect-her-from-forced-labor-washington-florist-settles-with-gay-activists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barronelle Stutzman<\/a>, and Colorado graphic designer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/13\/4-years-ago-scotus-failed-to-protect-artists-from-compelled-speech-its-about-to-get-another-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lorie Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition to the so-called Respect for Marriage Act, Heritage reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/religious-liberty\/commentary\/poll-voters-5-key-states-oppose-same-sex-marriage-bill-over-religious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201conly solidified\u201d<\/a> after pollsters informed voters that it would unleash a barrage of lawsuits against religious Americans who refuse to perform or participate in same-sex weddings or affirm those marriages. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, for every message tested in this survey, a majority of respondents said they were less likely to support the bill given the information,\u201d Heritage reported.<\/p>\n<p>When voters learned that religious organizations and for-profit businesses that are owned and operated by people with traditional beliefs about marriage would come under fire for those beliefs, dissent for the bill rose to 53 percent among all voters.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, when respondents were informed that this bill would make religious adoption agencies susceptible to losing their nonprofit status, opposition to the legislation measured at 52 percent. <\/p>\n<p>Approximately 51 percent of respondents, 70 percent of Republicans, said they were unlikely to support the legislation after they learned it \u201ccould weaponize the IRS against faith-based organizations, including religious schools, by threatening their nonprofit status for not recognizing same-sex marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll never directly asked whether the government should be able to tell religious nonprofits or other businesses what to believe but still yielded majority opposition generally and huge majority opposition from the constituents of several of the supportive GOP senators.<\/p>\n<p>Only three of the supportive Republican senators will need to change
