It cemented Eddie Murphy\u2019s super stardom and cranked out several pop ditties along the way.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNeutron Dance\u201d \u2013 The Pointer Sisters<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNew Attitude\u201d \u2013 Patti LaBelle<\/li>\n<li>\u201cStir It Up\u201d \u2013 Patti LaBelle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.80stees.com\/products\/beverly-hills-cop-mumford-t-shirt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axel Foley\u2019s Mumford Phys. Ed. T-shirt<\/a>\u00a0become a hot ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Sequels followed, of course, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/julie-hinds\/2022\/11\/23\/beverly-hills-cop-detroit-filming-scenes\/69672360007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth installment is in production<\/a>. None, to date, have captured the original\u2019s spark.<\/p>\n<p>How could they?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeverly Hills Cop\u201d nailed everything that made the 1980s wonderful to most \u2026\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/quentin-tarantino-says-were-living-in-one-of-the-worst-eras-in-moviegoing-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">save Quentin Tarantino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Star Power<\/h2>\n<p>Eddie Murphy proved he was a movie star with 1982\u2019s \u201c48 Hours.\u201d That action comedy translated his \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d chops to the big screen and found him holding his own with Nick Nolte.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it was time for Murphy to fly solo.<\/p>\n<p>The 1980s routinely build films around colorful screen personalities. Think Whoopi Goldberg (\u201cJumpin\u2019 Jack Flash,\u201d \u201cBurglar,\u201d \u201cFatal Beauty\u201d), Steve Martin (\u201cRoxanne,\u201d \u201cDead Men Don\u2019t Wear Plaid,\u201d \u201cThe Man with Two Brains\u201d) and Chevy Chase (\u201cFletch,\u201d \u201cFunny Farm\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Murphy enjoyed his own string of solo projects (\u201cThe Golden Child,\u201d \u201cComing to America\u201d), but none proved as effortless as \u201cCop.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Rebels with a Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The \u201980s were all about defying authority, be it the scientists saving New York City in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/econpop-andrew-heaton-ghostbusters-capitalism\/\">Ghostbusters<\/a>\u201d to Bill Murray\u2019s rebellious soul in \u201cStripes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Axel Foley can\u2019t stop breaking police procedures in \u201cCop,\u201d and at every step that proves to be the right call. The film\u2019s finale finds his unofficial partners Taggart and Rosewood (John Ashton and Judge Reinhold) picking up his knack for rule bending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the celebrated character arc in the film, and it fits right into the \u201980s mindset.<\/p>\n<h2>Politically Incorrect<\/h2>\n<p>Axel Foley will do whatever it takes to nail the bad guys. If that means acting like a spurned gay lover, so be it.\u00a0That scene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/12\/16\/movies\/exit-stallone-enter-eddie-murphy.html?pagewanted=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sprang from Murphy\u2019s imagination<\/a>, earning him the admiration of director Martin Brest.<\/p>\n<p>Axel\u2019s quest begins with him investigating the death of his old friend, an unrepentant thief (James Russo).<\/p>\n<p>This was the \u201980s, a time when comedies followed the funny without any kind of hand wringing. \u201cCop\u201d isn\u2019t as aggressively unawoke as, say, \u201cSixteen Candles,\u201d but the action comedy never walks on eggshells.<\/p>\n<h2>The Story Made Sense<\/h2>\n<p>Today\u2019s screenwriters want to dazzle us with their brilliance. That leaves films with intricate plots that offer surprises, twists and other tics that can leave audiences woozy. It\u2019s a 21st century convention, and too many movies follow that path.<\/p>\n<p>Some screenwriters ape it with panache, like Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cInception.\u201d Many others deliver screenplays far too knotty for their own good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeverly Hills Cop\u201d is straight down the middle. Axel drives to Beverly Hills to avenge his old friend\u2019s death, only to discover an art tycoon trafficking in smuggled goods. The Oscar-nominated screenplay lets Steven Berkoff\u2019s villain reveal his treachery scene by scene.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need a roadmap to follow the story, and that lets the characters and humor take center stage.<\/p>\n<h2>It Almost Had Stallone<\/h2>\n<p>The \u201cBeverly Hills Cop\u201d project languished in development hell for years, with stars like Mickey Rourke briefly attached. The decade\u2019s biggest action star, Sylvester Stallone, wanted to make \u201cCop\u201d his next blockbuster hit.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, he took out some of the comedic elements and spiked the R-rated action beats. It wasn\u2019t enough, though, and the \u201cRocky\u201d star left the project days before cameras were set to roll. He later used some of the concepts he brought to the screenplay on his 1986 cop thriller \u201cCobra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What could be more \u201980s than Stallone\u2019s flirtation with the film?<\/p>\n<h2>Introducing Harold Faltermeyer\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The German composer wrote the addictive \u201cAxel F.\u201d theme that did more than power the story. It proved instantly iconic. Just a few bars are enough to evoke the \u201980s to even the casual movie goer.<\/p>\n<p>Ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zedge.net\/ringtone\/361063d0-d057-43a5-8d68-a45bf5d5355b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Griffith of \u201cFamily Guy\u201d fame.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Faltermeyer\u2019s sound gave the decade its identity.
