They are making the switch, as reporter Ruth Graham explains, despite being thwarted by a pope whose hostility to the ancient rite contrasts sharply with the conciliation and pastoral generosity demonstrated by his immediate predecessors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n<p>My own family <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/14\/one-year-ago-i-started-attending-the-traditional-latin-mass-and-havent-looked-back\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">migrated<\/a> to the Latin Mass in 2021 for many of the reasons cited by the families interviewed for the report. Yet my reaction to the piece, unlike that of some Catholic bloggers and conservative Catholic writers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelbd\/status\/1593289577095208969?cxt=HHwWkoC9sbibwJwsAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Brendan Dougherty<\/a>, sounded a little less like <em>Deo gratias<\/em> and a little more like <em>cui bono?<\/em> On the one hand, at a time when Rome has literally<a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2021\/12\/18\/211218c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> forbidden<\/a> most Catholic parishes from advertising the scheduled times of Latin Masses in their church bulletins, Latin Mass attendees are probably grateful for The New York Times\u2019 free publicity. On the other hand, it\u2019s intriguing that an ancient liturgy representing \u201ca fraction of Masses performed at the 17,000 Catholic parishes in the US\u201d was important enough to warrant a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/publicroad\/status\/1592946744488120321?cxt=HHwWgsCitfqnpJssAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">front page<\/a> spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet significant it is, but not for the reasons close to the hearts of traditional Catholics caught up in the turmoil of Pope Francis\u2019s severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/motu_proprio\/documents\/20210716-motu-proprio-traditionis-custodes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restrictions<\/a> on the Latin Mass, senior prelates\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/pope-francis-american-cardinals-are-pro-lgbt-revolutionaries-with-a-radical-agenda-for-the-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abandonment<\/a> of core Catholic teaching, and liturgical cringefests in the New Mass or <em>Novus Ordo<\/em> Mass.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the real focus is sneaked into the third paragraph, where Graham describes the resurgence of the Latin Mass as \u201cpart of a rising right-wing strain within American Christianity.\u201d The report is no bigoted attack on \u201cradical-traditional Catholics\u201d like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/08\/radical-traditionalist-catholic-christian-rosary-weapon\/671122\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>\u2019s recent sledgehammer of an \u201cexpos\u00e9,\u201d a piece so outrageously obnoxious that the original headline and cover art had to be <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillyGribbin\/status\/1559309633038303233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scrubbed<\/a>. Graham\u2019s style and substance is far more subtle, sophisticated, and insightful. But the underlying message is unsettling, and certainly not a celebration of traditional Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p>Graham, who covers religious affairs for The New York Times, is evidently taking a pause from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/11\/us\/how-white-evangelical-christians-fused-with-trump-extremism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profiling<\/a> white evangelical Christian \u201cextremists\u201d and pivoting to the increasing number of Latin Mass Catholics. Like their evangelical brothers and sisters, traditional Catholics believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, adhere to its theological and moral truths, and profess that God\u2019s law is eternal and unchangeable. Clearly, this makes traditionalists <em>personae non gratae<\/em> with the cultural and political elite, and therefore a strain worth examining.<\/p>\n<p> Roots of Resurgence <\/p>\n<p>The Latin Mass is hardly novel. It was the liturgical form celebrated in every Catholic Church throughout the world for hundreds of years until the revolutionary Vatican II reforms of the 1960s. After that, it lingered in the background for decades before bursting back onto center stage during the pandemic.
