The 2021 musical \u201cEncanto,\u201d for example, brought in over $27 million over the weekend and $40 million over the long Thanksgiving weekend.<\/p>\n<p>And if Variety\u2019s assessment is accurate, the red ink \u201cStrange World\u201d is sinking into is only likely to get deeper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally this time of year, a Disney family film is the big draw,\u201d Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst, explained. \u201cIt shows we\u2019re still recovering and adapting to the constraints of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But whether people are, as Dergarabedian suggested, still slow to get out in the numbers that they might have pre-pandemic or they simply were not interested in this particular offering, the end result is the same: the people aren\u2019t flocking to see \u201cStrange World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Variety\u2019s estimate, based on the lack of buzz surrounding the film\u2019s release \u2014 coupled with reviews that aren\u2019t likely to bring more viewers in \u2014 is that \u201cStrange World\u201d will fall far short of the $360 million Disney needs to just break even.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Adjusted for inflation, Strange World was a bigger flop than Treasure Planet was 20 years ago.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/disney?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#disney<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/animation?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#animation<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5y33nugwwm\">pic.twitter.com\/5y33nugwwm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kneon (@Kneon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kneon\/status\/1596963196882911233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And with the movie\u2019s poor box office performance already evident, some are beginning to speculate that executives expected it to fail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaw Strange World and I\u2019ll be damned, Disney Animation actually had a character that wasn\u2019t just lip service for online articles but now I wonder if that is the reason for the weak marketing\/merch for this film,\u201d @Saberspark <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Saberspark\/status\/1596249976488660992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cMy theory: the execs want this film to go under the radar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZakaZ96\/status\/1596269341280210945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comments<\/a> responding to @saberspark made similar suggestions, observing that few trailers for \u201cStrange World\u201d had made it into other releases and questioning whether this film\u2019s lackluster performance \u2014 along with <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/disneys-strange-world-film-to-include-openly-gay-teen-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-release backlash<\/a> over an overtly gay teen character and the relatively poor showing made by Pixar\u2019s \u201cLightyear\u201d \u2014 might be used as an excuse to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jordanjwoodson\/status\/1593325953354272768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">move away<\/a> from LGBTQ themes in future content.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Disclosure: The Daily Wire has announced plans for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/videos\/introducing-dw-kids\">kids entertainment content<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Disney\u2019s newest release \u201cStrange World\u201d has bombed so spectacularly at the box office that it is on track to lose $100 million \u2014 if not more \u2014 and some are wondering if executives planned that from the start.
