Chris Murphy (D-CT) admitted that President Joe Biden has \u201cprobably not\u201d secured the needed 60 votes to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/gun-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gun control<\/a> in the lame-duck session of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on CNN\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2022\/11\/27\/chris-murphy-assault-weapons-ban-sotu-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State of the Union<\/a>\u201d Sunday, Murphy dashed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a>\u2018s hopes to pass an assault weapons ban. However, Murphy did praise the sweeping gun bill passed earlier this year and claimed that banning assault weapons would lead to fewer mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad that President Biden is going to be pushing us to take a vote on an assault weapons ban,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cThe House has already passed it. It\u2019s sitting in front of the Senate. Does it have 60 votes in the Senate right now? Probably not. But let\u2019s see if we can try to get that number as close to 60 as possible. If we don\u2019t have the votes, then we will talk to Senator Schumer and maybe come back next year with maybe an additional senator and see if we can do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden is right,\u201d Murphy continued. \u201cIf we passed an assault weapons ban, we would see less mass shootings in this country. Yes, there are already tens of thousands of assault weapons on the street. Nobody\u2019s talking about taking those weapons away from individuals. We\u2019re just talking about stopping new sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if you look at some of the most high-profile mass shootings in the last couple of years, many of those mass shooters bought the weapon just days before carrying out the crime,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd so, if those weapons were no longer commercially available, only in possession of those who had bought them previously, I think a lot of mass shootings would have been prevented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden told reporters Thursday that he planned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-says-he-wants-congress-to-pass-gun-control-in-lame-duck-session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">push for an assault weapons ban<\/a> after two recent mass shootings left 11 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sick and tired of these shootings,\u201d Biden said. \u201cWe should have much stricter gun laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden then said he intended to pass a gun control bill during the lame-duck session if he could get the votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to try,\u201d Biden replied. \u201cI\u2019m going to try to get rid of assault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the lame duck?\u201d the reporter asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to do it whenever I \u2014 I got to make that assessment as I get in and start counting the votes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
