The news came following reports of \u201cwidespread military action\u201d targeting Ukraine\u2019s national energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>A fresh round of missile strikes in Ukraine meant that the plant was taken offline, prompting 20 diesel generators on the site to begin operating automatically.\n<\/p>\n<p>Eight generators reportedly began supplying the nuclear plant with sufficient power to keep safety-related equipment online, and a further 12 generators were left in standby mode.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Recent Shelling Risked Nuclear Accident in Ukraine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The news comes just days after Rosatom, the Russian state-run atomic energy agency, warned that the Zaporizhzhia plant was at risk of experiencing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/top-russian-official-warns-possible-nuclear-accident-zaporizhzhia-2022-11-21\/\">nuclear accident<\/a> following strikes that occurred over the weekend. Both Kyiv and Moscow denied responsibility for the strikes which caused significant damage to buildings and safety equipment on the facility.\n<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iaeaorg\/status\/1594281943742324736\">statement<\/a> over the weekend, the IAEA said that roughly a dozen blasts occurred on the site as a result of shelling, causing some site buildings, systems, and equipment to become seriously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/zaporizhzhia-rafael-mariano-grossi-iaea-60-minutes-video-2022-11-20\/\">damaged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi called on whichever party is responsible for the attacks to \u201cstop immediately\u201d and warned that fighting on the site was like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/11\/chernobyl-2-0-who-is-attacking-a-nuclear-plant-in-ukraine\/\">playing with fire<\/a>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/11\/zaporizhzhia-nuclear-plant-hit-is-ukraine-headed-towards-a-nuclear-crisis\/\">Grossi<\/a> also called for an agreement between the two sides to establish a nuclear safety and security zone around the plant, and insisted that he would not give up until it has \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iaeaorg\/status\/1594281948796649475\">become a reality<\/a>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Photographs and video footage of the damage caused on the site were shared on social media in recent days, showing burst pipes and leaks, walls completely destroyed, and massive craters in the ceiling of a building on the plant\u2019s grounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/runews\/status\/1594293464983814145\">Video footage<\/a> also showed explosions on the facility\u2019S GROUNDS, with recordings made through panels of broken glass.
