We should have much stricter gun laws,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Biden first called for tougher enforcement of existing red-flag laws, which allow authorities to take guns away from people deemed dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt saves lives. So that\u2019s number one,\u201d Biden said of red-flag laws, also known as\u00a0extreme risk protection orders (ERPO).<\/p>\n<p>While some studies, like one from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (<a href=\"https:\/\/efsgv.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Extreme-Risk-Law-Research-Overview-November-2021.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) and another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/extreme-risk-protection-orders-assist-in-preventing-mass-shooting-events-study-shows\/\">from the<\/a> University of Michigan\u2019s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, claim that ERPOs can help reduce suicides and mass shootings, research from the RAND Corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy\/analysis\/extreme-risk-protection-orders.html\">found the evidence<\/a> inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting in Nantucket, the president also took aim at semi-automatic guns.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who has previously called for banning semi-automatic firearms, including handguns, said that \u201cthe idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just sick. It has no, no social redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single, solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers,\u201d Biden continued, adding that he would push for a ban on assault weapons during the lame duck Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to do it whenever \u2026 I got to make that assessment as I get in and start counting the votes,\u201d Biden added.<\/p>\n<h2>Red-Flag Laws<\/h2>\n<p>While there are no federal ERPO regulations, a number of states have adopted red-flag laws.<\/p>\n<p>A recent Associated Press analysis found that existing red-flag laws in 19 states and the District of Columbia were used to remove firearms from people 15,049 times since 2020, or fewer than 10 per 100,000 adult residents.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts have suggested the reason red-flag laws haven\u2019t been shown to be effective in reducing violent crime is that authorities either aren\u2019t aware of the laws or are reluctant to enforce them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too small a pebble to make a ripple,\u201d Duke University sociologist Jeffrey Swanson, who has studied red-flag laws, said of the AP tally, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/red-flag-laws-get-little-use-even-as-mass-shootings-gun-deaths-soar\">remarks to PBS<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s as if the law doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While gun control advocates have touted red-flag laws as a powerful tool to reduce violent crime, gun rights advocates have argued that such laws won\u2019t be effective at reducing crime but will only make law-abiding citizens more vulnerable by reducing their access to tools they can use to defend themselves and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re taking away someone\u2019s property and means of self-defense,\u201d\u00a0Richard Mack, a former Arizona sheriff who heads the pro-gun Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, told PBS.<\/p>\n<p>Others have argued that the problem isn\u2019t guns but the lack of institutionalization of the mentally ill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that absent institutionalization of disturbed individuals, such persons presenting actual threats to society will remain a threat even after seizing their firearms, as they will still have the ability to use a knife, motor vehicle, or countless other potentially lethal items to commit mass murder,\u201d some two dozen conservative South Dakota lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/conservative-fight-against-red-flag-laws-slows-washingtons-gun-control-push_3049436.html\">wrote in a 2019<\/a> letter advocating against red-flag laws.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher C. Hull, a public affairs executive and Epoch Times contributor, echoed this sentiment in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/highland-park-shooting-shows-why-gun-control-is-insane_4648661.html\">recent op-ed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 1960 to 1964, there was not a single notable mass shooting in the United States,\u201d Hull wrote.\u00a0\u201cThen do-gooders decided on \u2018deinstitutionalization\u2019\u2014that is, to simply release virtually all of the mentally ill into American society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we emptied out America\u2019s insane asylums, mentally ill people began killing Americans en masse,\u201d Hull wrote, noting that several studies have shown a link between mental illness and mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat-controlled House\u00a0introduced a bill in June, known as the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/117\/bills\/hr2377\/BILLS-117hr2377rh.pdf\">pdf<\/a>), which would have created a federal red-flag gun law.
