Version: 4.0.47--><p>Popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-tax-filing\">tax filing<\/a> software, such as\u00a0TaxAct, TaxSlayer, and\u00a0H&#038;R Block, reportedly\u00a0violated financial privacy by sending sensitive personal information to Meta\u2019s Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s Pixels, Facebook\u2019s widely used code\u00a0that tracks user activity on the internet, allowed the social media giant to secretly receive personal financial information through online tax filing services, according to a joint investigative report by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/11\/22\/23471842\/facebook-hr-block-taxact-taxslayer-info-sharing\">The Markup\u00a0and The Verge<\/a> on Nov. 22.<\/p>\n<p>The unauthorized data collection was discovered earlier this year by The Markup, in a project with Mozilla Rally called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/themarkup.org\/series\/pixel-hunt\">Pixel Hunt<\/a>,\u201d in which participants installed a browser extension that sent the investigators a copy of all data shared with Meta through the pixel.<\/p>\n<p>The Internal Revenue Service says that it processes\u00a0about 150 million\u00a0electronic individual tax returns a year.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other countries, the United States has a privatized tax filing system that utilizes third parties to prepare individual filings, leaving American taxpayers at the mercy of private companies to file their returns.<\/p>\n<p>Tax preparation has become a massive $11 billion industry in the United States, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/industry-statistics\/market-size\/tax-preparation-services-united-states\/\">research data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Meta Using Pixels to Track and Gather Info<\/h2>\n<p>The Pixel trackers embedded in the tax preparation software forwarded information like names, email addresses, income information, and refund and\u00a0college scholarship amounts to Meta, in violation of its official policies.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook allegedly took the sensitive tax data to boost its advertising algorithms, even if an individual using the tax filing services did not have an account on platforms owned by its parent, Meta, said the report.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Facebook\u2019s code has been exposed for tracking people online without their consent, and Meta has long been known for exploiting its technology that publishers and businesses embed on their websites.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook admitted to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/services\/files\/9d8e069d-2670-4530-bcdc-d3a63a8831c4\">Congress in 2018<\/a>\u00a0that there were more than 2 million Pixels across the web, as part of its massive data harvesting operation that most internet users were not aware of.<\/p>\n<p>The trackers were willingly installed by companies to allow them to target ads toward potential customers based on sites that they previously visited and would later send a message back to Facebook recording each visit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4871847\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Google-logo-1200x798-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-large wp-image-4871847\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Google-logo-1200x798-1.jpg\" alt=\"Google logo\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4871847\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Google-logo-1200x798-1.jpg\" alt=\"Google logo\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> The logo of Google during the Viva Tech start-up and technology summit in Paris on May 25, 2018. (Charles Platiau\/Reuters)<\/figure>\n<h2>Forced to Confront Data Breach<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, The Markup also discovered that TaxAct had transmitted similar financial information to Alphabet\u00a0through its Google Analytics tool, but did not share individual names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did NOT know and were never notified that personal tax information was being collected by Facebook from the Pixel,\u201d Megan McConnell, a spokesperson for Ramsey Solutions,\u00a0a financial advisory firm that uses TaxSlayer, told The Markup.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell said that Ramsey told TaxSlayer to remove Pixel tracking from its SmartTax software, which suggested that many clients were unaware of the security breach.<\/p>\n<p>She explained an email that the company only \u201cimplemented the Meta Pixel to deliver a more personalized customer experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Intuit\u2019s TurboTax, the most used online filing software in the United States, also utilized the Pixel, but they denied sending financial information to Meta, but only forwarded usernames along with the last time a customer signed in.<\/p>\n<p>The tax service company told The Markup that the Pixel is not used on its website past the sign-in page.<\/p>\n<p>Intuit\u2019s use of Pixels \u201cdoes not track, gather, or share information that users enter in TurboTax while filing their taxes,\u201d Rick Heineman, a company spokesperson told The Markup.<\/p>\n<p>An H&#038;R Block spokesperson<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/22\/popular-tax-prep-software-sent-financial-information-to-meta-report.html\"> told CNBC<\/a> that the company took \u201cprotecting our clients\u2019 privacy very seriously, and we are taking steps to mitigate the sharing of client information via pixels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe privacy of our customers is very important to all of us at TaxAct, and we continue to comply with all laws and IRS regulations,\u201d a TaxAct spokesperson told CNBC, regarding The Markup report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData provided to Facebook is used at an aggregate level, not the individual level, by TaxAct to analyze our advertising effectiveness. (Wilfredo Lee, File\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<h2>Tax Preparation Firms Restrict Use of Pixel<\/h2>\n<p>Since news of the report broke, TaxAct said that it will no longer send financial details like income and refund amount to Meta, but would continue to send the names of dependents and would still send financial information to Google Analytics, The Markup reported.<\/p>\n<p>TaxSlayer told The Markup in an email that the company had removed the Pixel from its software and would reevaluate its use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers\u2019 privacy is of utmost importance, and we take concerns about our customers\u2019 information very seriously,\u201d said TaxSlayer spokesperson, Molly Richardson, who added that Ramsey Solutions had also \u201cdecided to remove the pixel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TaxSlayer and Ramsey Solutions have since removed the Pixel from their tax filing sites, while TurboTax has stopped sending usernames through the Pixel at sign-in, The Markup reported.<\/p>\n<p>H&#038;R Block will now only send Pixel information on health savings accounts and college tuition grants.<\/p>\n<h2>Google and Meta Defend Data Tracking<\/h2>\n<p>However, spokespersons for Google and Meta defended their software and blamed the tax preparation companies for improperly sending private data to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny data in Google Analytics is obfuscated, meaning it is not tied back to an individual and our policies prohibit customers from sending us data that could be used to identify a user,\u201d Google spokesperson Jackie Bert\u00e9 told The Markup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, Google has strict policies against advertising to people based on sensitive information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvertisers should not send sensitive information about people through our Business Tools,\u201d Dale Hogan, a Meta spokesperson, told The Markup in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing so is against our policies and we educate advertisers on properly setting up Business tools to prevent this from occurring.
