According to Mission Local, Peskin eventually decided to accept the change because \u201cthere could be scenarios where the deployment of lethal force was the only option.\u201d San Francisco\u2019s rules committee unanimously approved a version of the draft last week, which will face the Board of Supervisors on November 29th.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As outlined in the equipment policy, the SFPD has 17 remotely piloted robots, with 12 functioning.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal also authorizes the deadly robots to \u201ctraining and simulations, criminal apprehensions, critical incidents, exigent circumstances, executing a warrant or during suspicious device assessments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfetched.com\/world-economic-forum-reveals-ai-censorship-plan-to-tackle-hate-speech\/\">World Economic Forum Reveals AI Censorship \u2018Plan\u2019 to Tackle \u2018Hate Speech\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As The Verge notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>While most of the robots listed in the SFPD\u2019s inventory are primarily used for defusing bombs or dealing with hazardous materials, newer Remotec models have an optional weapons system, and the department\u2019s existing F5A has a tool called the PAN disruptor that can load 12-gauge shotgun shells. It\u2019s typically used to detonate bombs from a distance. The department\u2019s QinetiQ Talon can also be modified to hold various weapons \u2014 a weaponized version of the robot is currently used by the US Army and can equip grenade launchers, machine guns, or even a .50-caliber anti-materiel rifle.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSFPD\u2019s need to deliver deadly force via robot would be a rare and exceptional circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSFPD has always had the ability to use lethal force when the risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers are imminent and outweigh any other force option available,\u201d says SFPD Officer Eve Laokwansathitaya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSFPD does not have any sort of specific plan in place as the unusually dangerous or spontaneous operations where SFPD\u2019s need to deliver deadly force via robot would be a rare and exceptional circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the Dallas Police Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/jul\/08\/police-bomb-robot-explosive-killed-suspect-dallas#:~:text=For%20what%20experts%20are%20calling,murdered%20and%20seven%20others%20wounded.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used a robot<\/a> to carry out deadly force when using the Remotec F5A model owned by the SFPD armed with an explosive device to kill a suspect who shot and killed five police officers.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas police chief David Brown said the department \u201csaw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/10\/17\/police-robot-gun-oakland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> report<\/a> from The Intercept, California\u2019s Oakland Police Department is also considering letting Remotec F5A robots use deadly force.<\/p>\n<p>But the Oakland PD later announced on Facebook it decided against adding \u201carmed remote vehicles to the department.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Francisco Police Department is proposing a new policy permitting robots to kill humans.
