Michael Eastman told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsmv.com\/2022\/11\/23\/body-vanderbilt-student-found-new-hampshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a> Sotelo\u2019s mother dropped her off for a solo hike around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning at Lafayette Place Campground in Franconia, New Hampshire, with the intent of hiking Mount Lafayette, Haystack, and Flume in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>By Sunday afternoon, Sotelo\u2019s mother reported to authorities her daughter did not arrive at the meeting location they had arranged, about seven to eight miles from where her body was found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer mother watched her go up the trail,\u201d Eastman said. \u201cHer mother was going to meet her further down the hiking route to meet her for food and provisions, but she did not arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief dispatched search and rescue teams Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>The Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, which coordinated the initial search and rescue efforts, said in a statement, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/20-year-hiker-missing-subzero-temperatures-2-days\/story?id=93791048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a>, that the \u201ctemperature along the ridge [where she was hiking was] about zero, [and] 30 to 40 mph winds [made] the chill factor -30 degrees. The elevation of the mountain range is more than 5,000 feet at its highest parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rescue teams, which included 60 ground searchers and air support, spent the next two days looking for Sotelo until locating foot tracks and items belonging to the hiker on Tuesday afternoon at the headwaters of Lafayette Brook, which is a little more than three miles from the start of the trail where she was dropped off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is strenuous to be up there,\u201d Eastman told local media. \u201cWe have people coming down that can hardly walk by the time they get to the bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities found Sotelo\u2019s body next to the Brook, where she may have stopped after veering off the trail due to the harsh elements, on Wednesday morning \u2014 the same day she turned 20 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Sotelo had previously hiked and enrolled herself in survival courses. However, authorities said she had only worn a jacket, exercise pants, and sneakers before leaving on her hike, which likely led to her death in the below-freezing temperatures and snow blowing up to 60 miles per hour.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have not revealed a cause of death. However, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department examiner confirmed there was no evidence of foul play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest lessons learned in a tragedy like this is when you\u2019re hiking in New Hampshire, especially in the White Mountains, be prepared for the unexpected,\u201d Fish and Game Department Major David Walsh told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmur.com\/article\/lost-hiker-body-found-franconia-notch-112322\/42052999#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a>, adding to be prepared with knowledge of the weather conditions, wear protective gear, and have food and water on hand.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Conservation officers in New Hampshire looking for this overdue hiker, who hasn&#8217;t been seen since yesterday morning.
