Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) defended Laughton on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s gotten into a lot of trouble over the years &#038; she keeps getting into trouble, but she\u2019s basically a good person,\u201d Horrigan tweeted. \u201cShe\u2019s not violent or abusive, or harmful to anyone other than herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GOP state Rep. Kim Rice replied to the Horrigan\u2019s stance, saying Laughton \u201cneeds some help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the person she was stalking would feel the same way,\u201d Rice said. \u201cI am thinking that person would definitely think they were harmed. I\u2019m shocked sitting on the [House] Judiciary Committee you would even say this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m sorry Tim she needs some help! I\u2019m shocked sitting on the judiciary committee you would even say this<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 kimberly a rice (@kimberlyarice1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kimberlyarice1\/status\/1592578958608207872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire House Democratic Majority Leader David Cote said Laughton \u201cis entitled to the due process and presumption of innocence afforded to all accused persons,\u201d and that he has \u201cfull confidence that New Hampshire\u2019s judicial system will take appropriate and swift actions to protect the rights of the accused and any victims,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizpacreview.com\/about-us\/\">BizPac Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Laughton, who was first elected to represent District 31 in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 2020, has had more than a decade of legal troubles.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, Laughton served four months in prison on a felony conviction for identity and credit card fraud and falsifying physical evidence, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities arrested and charged Laughton in 2015 for allegedly making a bomb threat to the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. The threat came after Laughton left another hospital receiving treatment for bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to hurt anyone,\u201d Laughton said at the time. \u201cIt was totally out of character for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities initially charged Laughton with making a false report of explosives. Still, a judge later reduced the charge to a misdemeanor after Laughton claimed to have suffered a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>After winning the New Hampshire house seat in 2020, Laughton was charged with several counts of providing false information through text messages to the city\u2019s 911 emergency system, which the sitting representative denied.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Smith, clerk of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhjournal.com\/nh-dem-rep-defends-alleged-stalker-shes-basically-a-good-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hampshire Journal<\/a> that the state does not have a mechanism in place to remove a lawmaker charged with a crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no rules,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThere is no automatic process for expulsion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/statute\/new-hampshire-revised-statutes\/title-59-proceedings-in-criminal-cases\/chapter-607-a-uniform-act-on-status-of-convicted-persons\/section-607-a2-rights-lost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hampshire law<\/a>\u00a0prohibits convicted felons from voting or holding public office while serving jail or prison sentences. However, a person may vote or seek public office once again after authorities discharge the convicted felon as long as they live in the district they seek to represent in congruence with the New Hampshire Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Pete Silva, a Nashua Republican, told <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/nashua\/nashua-democrat-state-rep-arrested-again-accused-stalking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patch<\/a> that it was unfortunate that Laughton refused to come clean with the voters of his district during the election process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I lived in the district, I would be extremely disappointed to learn, just days after the election, that my neighborhood was going to be represented by a person that only four years ago was convicted of a felony charge involving conspiracy and fraud and served time in prison,\u201d Silva told Patch.<\/p>\n<p>Laughton became the first transgender person elected to the New Hampshire Legislature in 2012, but resigned due to the 2008 conviction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Hampshire Democrat representative Stacie Laughton, the state\u2019s first openly transgender public official, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly violating a domestic violence order by stalking an unidentified woman.
