The apple, apparently, did not fall far from the tree.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried&#8217;s mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/directory\/barbara-fried\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbara Fried<\/a>, is a tax expert whose scholarship focuses on moral philosophy and &#8220;questions of distributive justice.&#8221; She has three degrees from Harvard and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/1\/6\/21046631\/mind-the-gap-silicon-valley-democratic-donors-stanford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led a left-wing super PAC<\/a> that funneled millions of dollars to Democrats. Bankman-Fried&#8217;s father, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/directory\/joseph-bankman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Bankman<\/a>, earned an undergraduate degree at Berkeley and a law degree from Yale. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/crypto\/2022\/11\/11\/sbfs-disgrace-could-make-things-awkward-for-gary-gensler-and-the-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> Fortune, he has helped Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) write tax legislation. He&#8217;s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificanxietygroup.com\/joe-bankman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical psychologist<\/a> who specializes in the &#8220;treatment of anxiety, depression, and adjustment in both teens and adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mom and Pops didn&#8217;t teach Sam how to drag a brush through his hair or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zackseward\/status\/1468641558346059777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tie his shoes<\/a>, but they did school him in the argot of the high-society bullshit artist: &#8220;utilitarianism,&#8221; &#8220;effective altruism,&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;commitment to the well-being of all people,&#8221; yadda, yadda, yadda.<\/p>\n<p>The do-gooder schtick was just that. &#8220;Man all the dumb shit I said,&#8221; Bankman-Fried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/23462333\/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-cryptocurrency-effective-altruism-crypto-bahamas-philanthropy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">texted<\/a> a reporter, &#8220;it&#8217;s not true, not really.&#8221; The reporter followed up: &#8220;So the ethics stuff\u2014mostly a front?&#8221; You know the answer.<\/p>\n<p>So we weren&#8217;t exactly shocked to read Tuesday&#8217;s Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/exclusive-bankman-frieds-ftx-parents-bought-bahamas-property-worth-121-mln-2022-11-22\/#:~:text=The%20documents%20for%20another%20home,and%20Barbara%20Fried%2C%20as%20signatories.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> indicating that Bankman and Fried appear to have been in on the FTX scam.
