I don\u2019t hate them. But I don\u2019t love them. I mean, look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be f***king happy and totally love them. [But] they wouldn\u2019t be the only movies being made, they would be those movies amongst other movies. I\u2019m almost 60 so I\u2019m not quite as excited about them,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Tarantino repeated a common criticism of the films, claiming they are overhyped and repetitive, plus leave less room for more creative projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy only ax to grind is they\u2019re the only things that seem to be made,\u201d the 59-year-old director said. \u201cAnd they\u2019re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them \u2026 So it\u2019s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There\u2019s not really much room for anything else. That\u2019s my problem. It\u2019s a problem of representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, he took a dig at the actors in Marvel movies, saying they weren\u2019t actually who people were coming to see. Tarantino claimed moviegoers only cared about superheroes on screen no matter who was playing them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,\u201d he asserted. \u201cBut they\u2019re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star. I\u2019m not the first person to say that. I think that\u2019s been said a zillion times, but it\u2019s these franchise characters that become a star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the \u201cReservoir Dogs\u201d director pined for movie star roles of the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in 2005, if an actor stars in a movie that does as good as the Marvel movies do, then that guy\u2019s an absolute star,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means people dig him or her and they like them and want to see them in stuff. Sandra Bullock is in \u2018Speed\u2019 and everyone thought she\u2019s amazing in it. Everyone fell in love with her \u2026 They were excited by Sandra Bullock and wanted to see her in something else. That\u2019s not the case now. We want to see that guy playing Wolverine or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tarantino\u2019s observations did not amuse several followers.<\/p>\n<p>Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld retweeted a story about Tarantino\u2019s comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robertliefeld\/status\/1595099498413318149\">calling it<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthe hottest of hot takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a later tweet, he shared, \u201cAs a writer\/creator it\u2019s my passion as well as my job to create compelling characters and worlds that draw the audience in and connect with them. Same thing that drives Stephen King, George R.R. Martin, so many others. I\u2019m in the character business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marvel actor Simu Liu, who starred in \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,\u201d also made his opinion known on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SimuLiu\/status\/1595125075040403456\">Twitter<\/a>. He claimed that signing onto a Marvel project was his only chance to make it in Hollywood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie. I am in awe of their filmmaking genius. They are transcendent auteurs,\u201d he wrote of Tarantino.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they don\u2019t get to point their nose at me or anyone. No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I\u2019m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere.
