Or, closer to home, imagine that city councilmembers in your quiet suburb decide that henceforth all speed limits will be set by the local auto racing club.<\/p>\n<p>We all would promptly object, haranguing the government for abdicating its most basic responsibility to citizens. \u201cFoxes shouldn\u2019t guard henhouses,\u201d we\u2019d say. Rules meant for public health and safety shouldn\u2019t become tools to advance special interests and profit seekers. Lifting pollution and speed limits may benefit factory and Ferrari owners, but the public at large will have to cope with the resulting damage.<\/p>\n<p>Farfetched as these examples might seem, something like this is happening in health care. Along the new frontier of \u201ctransgender health,\u201d novel and even destructive \u201cstandards of care\u201d are being set by ideologues and billionaire-backed foundations \u2014 all with the government\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, President Joe Biden\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a proposed rule under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. Behind its 190-plus pages and innocent-sounding name (\u201cNondiscrimination in Health Programs and Activities\u201d) hides a radical agenda that would reshape the nation\u2019s health care in alarming ways.<\/p>\n<p>HHS is proposing new national standards for what it calls \u201cgender affirming care,\u201d mandating that doctors provide these services and insurance plans cover them. What is \u201cgender affirming care\u201d exactly? HHS never really says. Its proposed rule neither defines the term nor identifies objective standards \u2014 such as age limits \u2014 that might apply. Instead, HHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2022\/08\/04\/2022-16217\/nondiscrimination-in-health-programs-and-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incorporates<\/a> guidance from medical societies and a group calling itself the \u201cWorld Professional Association for Transgender Health,\u201d or WPATH.<\/p>\n<p>WPATH is not a government agency. It is a trans-activist group. Its president is Dr. Marci Bowers, a man identifying as a woman and <a href=\"https:\/\/marcibowers.com\/dr-bowers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-described<\/a> \u201cpioneer in the field of Gender Affirmation Surgery\u201d with her own transgender reality show, \u201cSex Change Hospital.\u201d WPATH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wpath.org\/about\/EC-BOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">staff<\/a> appears to be largely borrowed from <a href=\"https:\/\/veritasamc.com\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Veritas<\/a>, a for-profit company that does marketing and public relations for medical societies. WPATH\u2019s funders include the Arcus Foundation (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2020\/01\/the-billionaires-behind-the-lgbt-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the largest LGBT funders in the world<\/a>\u201d), the Soros-backed Open Society Foundations, and the Tawani Foundation, headed by transgender billionaire Jennifer Pritzker.<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Standards\u2019 Reflect Radical Backers <\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the Tawani Foundation gave WPATH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpath.org\/media\/cms\/Documents\/History\/Awards\/2018\/Awards%20Information%20Page.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$200,000<\/a> to develop its so-called \u201cStandards of Care,\u201d a gift that earned Pritzker the WPATH \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tawanifoundation.org\/our-impact\/articles\/2643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Philanthropy Award<\/a>.\u201d And Pritzker is heavily invested in trans causes. While the foundation has been funneling money to groups like WPATH and the National Center for Transgender Equality, its for-profit arm, Tawani Enterprises, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/billionaire-family-pushing-synthetic-sex-identities-ssi-pritzkers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">making financial bets<\/a> on medical devices, implants, and surgical cutting tools.
