But so far, at least two of the GOP senators who voted to advance the legislation are doubling down on their support for the reckless bill that would endanger religious Americans\u2019 right to decline to provide services that contradict their consciences.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. Roy Blunt of Missouri, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Susan Collins of Maine, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Rob Portman of Ohio, Mitt Romney of Utah, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Todd Young of Indiana <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/15\/gop-senators-top-priority-after-failed-midterms-is-helping-democrats-trample-the-meaning-of-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all voted last week<\/a> to advance the RFMA, which would <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/22\/the-respect-for-marriage-act-is-an-exercise-in-tyranny-and-everyone-knows-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">codify<\/a> the Supreme Court\u2019s approval of same-sex marriage in <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> (and actually go further). <\/p>\n<p> No, the \u2018Respect for Marriage Act\u2019 Doesn\u2019t Protect Religious Americans <\/p>\n<p>Some, such as Portman, Collins, and Tillis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portman.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/senators-move-forward-bipartisan-respect-marriage-act-protections-religious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tried to couch<\/a> their support for the bill by erroneously arguing that the legislation will actually <em>protect <\/em>religious liberty and freedom of conscience. <\/p>\n<p>In reality, the bill enables quite the opposite by opening the door further for those who hold and live by traditional views of marriage to be punished by LGBT activists who have already <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/06\/the-never-ending-persecution-of-jack-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploited<\/a> the legal system to target religious Americans. Its lame protections against being \u201crequired to provide\u201d services celebrating same-sex marriage are limited to \u201cnonprofit religious organizations,\u201d which clearly excludes businesses that aren\u2019t explicitly religious but can still be owned and operated by devout Christians. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, and as legal scholars and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/defending-marriage-will-senate-republicans-display-courage-uphold-truth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other legislators<\/a> already noted, the so-called \u201cRespect For Marriage Act\u201d does nothing to stop vindictive leftists from \u201cdragging good people through the court system and a public tarring and feathering in the media for those simply living their lives in\u00a0fidelity to God.\u201d That includes targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF16L23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wedding vendors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2018\/10\/faith-based-adoption-agencies-under-attack-beto-orourke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adoption agencies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/jack-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bakeries<\/a>, and any other business run by people of faith who refuse to offer services condoning same-sex marriage based on religious convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite those concerns, only two of the 12 who voted against their party to move the bill forward responded to The Federalist\u2019s questions asking them to justify their support for the legislation and explain why there are no legal protections for private businesses. Both doubled down, although both refused to answer whether other so-called \u201cFirst Amendment protections\u201d in laws such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FACE Act<\/a> have adequately\u00a0protected Americans of faith from harassment and legal persecution. <\/p>\n<p> Lummis, Collins Double Down <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Cynthia Lummis told The Federalist that she will continue backing the bill because she believes it \u201cis consistent\u201d with the Wyoming Constitution and that it adequately ensures \u201creligious liberties\u00a0for\u00a0all citizens and faith-based organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEquality is enshrined in the Wyoming constitution, and this legislation is consistent with Article I, Section III.
