The first payments will be due two months after June 30, unless the Supreme Court greenlights the administration\u2019s debt forgiveness program beforehand. A similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-22\/white-house-to-extend-student-loan-payment-pause-up-to-june-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Bloomberg quoted multiple unnamed sources.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump introduced the pause on federal student loan repayment in March 2020 as a relief measure during the lockdown-induced recession. Trump and Biden had previously extended the pause for a total of seven times, implying that the upcoming freeze will mark the eighth such move, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adamminsky\/2022\/11\/15\/8-signs-biden-may-actually-extend-the-student-loan-pause-again\/?sh=4365a63f2226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>The previous extension of the pause on federal student loan payments was slated to expire on December 31. A number of reports had predicted that the White House would once again extend the freeze, which comes at a price tag of $5 billion per month, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/student-loan-pause-could-cost-275-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Extending the pause through the end of 2024 would cost as much as $120 billion, bringing the total cost of the pauses to $275 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago, however, Biden asserted during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-shocks-white-house-by-declaring-pandemic-is-over-while-hundreds-of-americans-die-every-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> that the \u201cpandemic is over,\u201d catching many federal health officials by surprise. \u201cIf you notice, no one\u2019s wearing masks,\u201d the commander-in-chief said. \u201cEverybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And so I think it\u2019s changing. And I think this is a perfect example of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student debt cancellation policy, which would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-biden-announces-details-of-student-loan-cancellation-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminate<\/a> $10,000 in student debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year and $20,000 for borrowers who used Pell Grants, is currently moving through the court system. The program is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-federal-court-freezes-bidens-student-loan-bailout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on hold<\/a> after a ruling from the Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, which granted standing to a lawsuit from multiple Republican state attorneys general who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/unfair-unconstitutional-and-unwise-two-more-lawsuits-hit-biden-over-student-debt-cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contended<\/a> that the White House illegally bypassed Congress while drafting the policy.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-administration-asks-supreme-court-to-allow-student-loan-forgiveness-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> the Supreme Court last week to rule on whether student debt cancellation can continue. \u201cThe Eighth Circuit\u2019s erroneous injunction leaves millions of economically vulnerable borrowers in limbo, uncertain about the size of their debt and unable to make financial decisions with an accurate understanding of their future repayment obligations,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Education has nevertheless started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-admin-tells-people-they-are-approved-for-student-loan-cancellation-even-as-court-battles-rage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informing borrowers<\/a> that they have been approved for debt cancellation. Some applicants received an email from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona saying they were \u201celigible for loan relief\u201d after a review of their submission. \u201cWe have sent this approval on to your loan servicer,\u201d the message said. \u201cYou do not need to take any further action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student loan cancellation policy garnered controversy even among allies of the White House. Multiple swing-state Democratic candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vulnerable-democrats-in-swing-states-distance-themselves-from-biden-on-student-debt-cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distanced themselves<\/a> from the move during the recent midterm elections, while Lawrence Summers, an economist who served under the Obama and Clinton administrations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/raises-demand-and-increases-inflation-obamas-top-economist-shreds-biden-plan-for-student-loan-cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that the policy \u201cconsumes resources that could be better used helping those who did not, for whatever reason, have the chance to attend college.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden reportedly plans to extend the pause on federal student loan payments through the summer of 2023 as his student debt cancellation plan faces legal challenges.
