DeSantis has not announced plans for a 2024 White House bid, but he is widely seen as a formidable primary competitor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-trump-launches-third-bid-for-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former President Trump<\/a>, who is running again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA good idea,\u201d Renner called the suggestion of repealing the so-called \u201cresign to run\u201d law.<\/p>\n<p>Renner spoke Tuesday after his colleagues formally elected him to lead the state\u2019s lower chamber.\u00a0New Senate President Kathleen Passidomo said she was on board with the change, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Speaker Renner thinks it\u2019s a good idea, I think it\u2019s a good idea,\u201d she told reporters.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fla House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Paul_Renner?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Paul_Renner<\/a> says he\u2019s willing to change state law during 2023 session so <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GovRonDeSantis<\/a> can run for president without having to resign. Called it a \u201cgood idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gary Fineout (@fineout) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fineout\/status\/1595121317107597312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&#038;SubMenu=1&#038;App_mode=Display_Statute&#038;Search_String=99.012&#038;URL=0000-0099\/0099\/Sections\/0099.012.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law states<\/a> that\u00a0\u201cAny officer who qualifies for federal public office must resign from the office he or she presently holds if the terms, or any part thereof, run concurrently with each other.\u201d But legal experts differ on how it might apply to a presidential run by DeSantis, who was re-elected as governor November 8 with a victory margin of nearly 20 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New Senate President Kathleen Passidomo <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kathleen4SWFL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Kathleen4SWFL<\/a> says it would be an honor to have someone from Fla running for president and agrees with Renner it would be good idea to change law<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gary Fineout (@fineout) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fineout\/status\/1595126453716545536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jon Mills, a constitutional law professor at the University of Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/article267845352.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in October it could depend on how far DeSantis got in a White House bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statute in text does say federal,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cThe question is when? What does \u2018qualification\u2019 mean, in terms of running for president? Does it mean you are the final nominee or is it when you qualify for the first primary state?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Julie Marcus wrote on her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.votepinellas.com\/Candidates-Committees\/Candidates\/-Resign-to-Run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>\u00a0that the law would not apply to a DeSantis effort to trade Tallahassee for Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u201cresign-to-run\u201d law prohibits an officer from qualifying as a candidate for another\u00a0state, district, county or municipal public office if the terms or any part overlap with each other unless the officer submits a resignation from the office the person presently holds,\u201d she wrote. \u201cTherefore, the \u201cresign-to-run\u201d law would not preclude a sitting state, district, county, or municipal officer from qualifying as a candidate for\u00a0federal\u00a0office without resigning from the office the person presently holds as long as the officer is not also seeking to qualify for re-election to his or her present office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, only Trump has announced a 2024 bid. But a\u00a0new poll from Iowa, where the presidential primary season gets underway every four years with the Iowa caucuses, showed Hawkeye State Republicans narrowly favor DeSantis over Trump, given the choice for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/NeighborhoodResearchMedia\/posts\/pfbid0YcN1n4ngyYdh5EFnB3iDcheebmxdQK7YU1qDkxjkkHjEyFNnhNaMZLBk6imv5ePdl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neighborhood Research and Media<\/a>\u00a0poll, released on Monday, showed 32% of respondents picked DeSantis as their first choice to run for president, followed by Trump at 30%.
