If in 10 minutes I hadn\u2019t been called, then we would leave. I went to the lady and said, \u2018I\u2019m Mickey Kuhn.\u2019 She said, \u2018Mickey, we\u2019ve been waiting for you.\u2019 And then to the others waiting, \u2018Thank you. We\u2019ve cast the part. You may all leave.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kuhn had already appeared in \u201cChange of Heart\u201d with Janet Gaynor when he was two. His mother took him to a Sears Roebuck store in Hollywood, where a woman unknown to them who had a daughter Kuhn\u2019s age suggested the children looked like twins and they should attend a casting call at Fox Studios the next day for twin infants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man in a suit swept in, took one look at Kuhn and proclaimed, \u2018This is the baby I want for my movie,\u2019\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naplesnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/2017\/12\/21\/child-actor-mickey-kuhn-beau-wilkes-movies-hollywoods-golden-age-gone-wind-naples-florida\/945464001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naples Daily News<\/a> reported in 2017 in a portrait of Kuhn.<\/p>\n<p>Kuhn subsequently appeared in 1937\u2019s \u201cA Doctor\u2019s Diary,\u201d then in the classic 1939 film \u201cJuarez\u201d starring Paul Muni and Bette Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Kuhn\u2019s most notable scene in \u201cGone With The Wind\u201d showed him in the arms of his father Ashley, played by Leslie Howard, as the two stood outside the bedroom where Ashley\u2019s wife and Beau\u2019s mother Melanie (played by Olivia de Havilland) was dying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is my mother going away to? And why can\u2019t I go along, please?\u201d Kuhn (as Beau) asked plaintively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was always behind the door dying,\u201d Kuhn said of de Havilland. \u201cI never worked directly with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took 67 years, but Kuhn finally met de Havilland in 2006 at her 90th birthday party in California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talk to her at least once a year. I call on her birthday,\u201d he stated in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In another scene in \u201cGone With The Wind,\u201d Kuhn was supposed to look up at Clark Gable, playing Rhett Butler, and say, \u201cHello, Uncle Rhett.\u201d But he kept mistakenly saying, \u201cHello, Uncle Clark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gable kindly said to him that he just needed to call him Uncle Rhett\u00a0just once, which worked. \u201cHe was just a real man\u2019s man,\u201d Kuhn recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Asked who was his favorite actor to work with, Kuhn named John Wayne, with whom he worked on \u201cRed River.\u201d\u00a0\u201cFirst of all, he was a perfectionist. We would rehearse a scene five times,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>One scene required Wayne to hit Kuhn, who was 14 at the time. Wayne asked him if it was okay with him. \u201cI looked up to him and what can you say to a big movie star? I said, \u2018That\u2019s fine, Mr. Wayne,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cHe smacked me good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kuhn made two movies with famed actress Vivien Leigh, \u201cGone With the Wind\u201d and \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire,\u201d the two films that netted Leigh her Academy Awards for Best Actress.<\/p>\n<p>When Leigh discovered Kuhn had played Beau as a child, she sent for him to join her in her dressing room where they could talk. \u201cShe asked about my career and what I had been doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely, absolutely beautiful,\u201d he remembered. \u201cShe was just one of the nicest people I have ever met.
