But now the publisher admits that the signatures were not being done by hand and purchasers are entitled to refunds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo those who purchased the \u2018Philosophy of Modern Song\u2019 limited edition, we want to apologize,\u201d Simon &#038; Schuster announced in a statement on social media. \u201cAs it turns out, the limited edition books do contain Bob\u2019s original signature, but in a penned replica form. We are addressing this immediately by providing each purchaser with an immediate refund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s1buWZSTs8\">pic.twitter.com\/s1buWZSTs8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Simon &#038; Schuster (@simonschuster) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simonschuster\/status\/1594437832726040576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 20, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The scandal was revealed when fans started comparing photos of the autographs on social media and noticed they looked identical. The books were issued with a letter from Simon &#038; Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp, guaranteeing the signature was authentic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hold in your hands something very special, one of just 900 copies available in the U.S.,\u201d the letter said. \u201cThis letter is confirmation that the copy of the book you hold in your hand has been hand-signed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/celebrities\">Bob Dylan<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems that the books were signed using \u201cautopen,\u201d which captures a genuine signature and reproduces it using a machine-powered pen, as Variety <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/music\/news\/bob-dylan-book-replica-autographs-autopen-philosophy-modern-song-refunds-1235438173\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Philosophy of Modern Song\u201d was published on November 1 and includes Dylan\u2019s commentary on 66 songs by other artists. This is the first book Dylan has published since he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 2016 \u201cfor having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some fans were unhappy with the apology, claiming Simon &#038; Schuster must have known the signatures were replicas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing other than fraud driven by greed. Decision to refund now is because it will be less costly than defending a class action lawsuit,\u201d one Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveC_Photos\/status\/1594592539369259009\">shared<\/a>. \u201cCEO &#038; other execs who put names to the \u2018certificate of authenticity\u2019 guarantee should resign &#038; authorities charge those involved in this scam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wrote hand signed, you are just lying,\u201d another person <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jesselittle16\/status\/1594522826622795776\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cYou used 17 signature variations to attempt to [get] away with it. Just admit it. Its [sic] a signature honor it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dylan, 81, is considered one of the most influential songwriters of all time, with a career spanning more than 60 years.
