However, it signals that red states are not immune to their local universities foisting woke values on their young people and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2018,\u00a0UT-Austin released a seven-page DEI <a href=\"https:\/\/utexas.app.box.com\/s\/86ufnux2332hw8ndq7ulib5vc7hfl65u\">plan<\/a> responding to <a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.utexas.edu\/actionplan\/background\/\">student demands<\/a>.\u00a0In 2020, students <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/ut-students-release-list-of-demands-for-transformative-change\">presented<\/a> the school with yet <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Qj017DGgEi0lH5zkSZIVTwPIPfI4uw971cvvRpWTZf8\/edit\">another slate<\/a> of demands, including that Austin police be removed from campus, that admissions adopt a test-optional admissions process, and that the school require students to learn about the \u201cracist background\u201d of the university\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n<p>UT-Austin responded with a new 29-page DEI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/utexas.app.box.com\/s\/07gro61mcobe0gkpae0jp9gnfrlzwmzb\">plan<\/a>, and since then the school has implemented DEI in various ways.<\/p>\n<p>In one example, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dellmed.utexas.edu\/blog\/understanding-health-in-equity-a-list-of-recommendations\">reading list<\/a> published by the\u00a0medical school\u2019s Associate Dean for Health Equity includes titles by authors who are essentially the patron saints of woke. The list includes\u00a0\u201cHow To Be An Antiracist\u201d by Ibram X. Kendi and \u201cWhite Fragility\u201d by Robin DiAngelo as well as an essay called \u201cWhite Privilege: Unpacking The Invisible Knapsack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRacism contributes to health inequity,\u201d the associate dean writes.<\/p>\n<p>UT-Austin\u00a0has also embedded DEI into its tenure and promotion policies, saying that each school will\u00a0\u201cdevelop mechanisms for evaluating faculty contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their units for considerations of merit and promotion,\u201d according to UT-Austin\u2019s strategic <a href=\"https:\/\/utexas.app.box.com\/s\/g74axpkhbneupxotfcbvtrpqxil7vhv8\">plan<\/a> for faculty DEI.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, new faculty positions are infused with DEI.<\/p>\n<p>UT-Austin\u2019s Religious Studies department is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/utaustin.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com\/en-US\/UTstaff\/job\/UT-MAIN-CAMPUS\/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-in-Ancient-Mediterranean-Religions_R_00023625\">hiring<\/a> an early Christianity\u00a0scholar to research topics including the \u201creligious identities\u201d of \u201csexual minorities\u201d and \u201cfeminist and intersectional interpretation of biblical texts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UT-Austin is not the only prominent school\u00a0in Texas that has embraced DEI.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas A&#038;M system, whose flagship school is the state\u2019s\u00a0oldest public university, has fully integrated DEI policies as well.<\/p>\n<p>Texas A&#038;M\u2019s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences recently\u00a0hired an Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence. The school is also <a href=\"https:\/\/aglifesciences.tamu.edu\/inclusive-excellence\/\">requiring<\/a> each department to\u00a0establish a \u201cclimate committee.\u201d Texas A&#038;M\u2019s dentistry school has an entire Diversity and Inclusion <a href=\"https:\/\/dentistry.tamu.edu\/education\/academic-affairs\/docs\/diversity-and-inclusion-plan-approved-092217.pdf\">Plan<\/a> of its own that actually cites UT-Austin\u2019s plan as a resource.\u00a0In 2020, Texas A&#038;M\u2019s School of Education &#038; Human Development (SEHD) <a href=\"https:\/\/mysehd.tamu.edu\/oie\/\">created<\/a> an \u201cEquity &#038; Social Justice Collective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet another Texas school, Texas Tech University, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/biology\/resources\/diversity\/docs\/Diversity_Statement_Rubric.pdf\">strict rules<\/a> for its biology department on evaluating faculty candidates based on how they talk about diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The department must take into account whether faculty candidates \u201cdiscuss diversity in vague terms,\u201d \u201cseem uncomfortable discussing diversity-related issues,\u201d or seem unaware of \u201cpersonal challenges that underrepresented individuals face in academia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Florida, where the\u00a0Republican governor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/11\/08\/us\/elections\/results-florida-governor.html\">cruised<\/a> to victory by double digits this month, DEI is pervasive at many schools.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Central Florida has an active DEI office that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.ucf.edu\/odi-land-acknowledgement-statement\/\">includes<\/a> a \u201cland acknowledgement,\u201d essentially a statement acknowledging that the university\u2019s land traditionally belongs to Native American tribes.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Florida, where retiring Republican Senator Ben Sasse will take over as university president next year, has a DEI office and strategy as well.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s Office of the Chief Diversity Officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdo.ufl.edu\/initiatives\/inclusive-excellence-blueprint\/\">boasts<\/a> that University of Florida has\u00a0more than 1,000 unique DEI initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Unless a school is specifically counter-cultural, as some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niche.com\/colleges\/thomas-more-college-of-liberal-arts\/\">private<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niche.com\/colleges\/christendom-college\/\">religious<\/a> liberal arts colleges are, it is likely to have invested heavily in DEI, even if the school is in a red state.<\/p>\n<p>Texas and Florida may be red, but their universities are very much not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In New York and California,\u00a0institutions of higher education bought into wokeness wholesale years ago, but now schools in red states have been infected as well.
