But also like most Americans, I don\u2019t know much about turkeys beyond the fact that they can get very big and taste very good, especially with stuffing and mashed taters.<\/p>\n<p>But after watching President Biden participate in the annual White House turkey pardoning ceremony Monday, I learned a lot more about turkeys and their mannerisms \u2013 and came to have more respect for them in the process.<\/p>\n<p>It all started when a video clip circulated of a turkey named \u201cChocolate\u201d being put on a table in order to be pardoned by Biden during the event. Biden had a mic in his hand, a dangerous thing as <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/sister-toldjah\/2022\/09\/27\/a-disturbing-pattern-emerges-with-joe-bidens-handlers-n633520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his handlers<\/a> would tell you \u2013 off the record, of course. <\/p>\n<p>After confirming the name of the clearly uncomfortable turkey, he informed it that it was being rescued from appearing on some family\u2019s table to eat in a few days. <\/p>\n<p>He then proceeded to pet it and carry on a short, pretend conversation. Nothing necessarily wrong with that. We\u2019ve all talked to our pets in cutesy voices before, right? From the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/11\/21\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-pardoning-of-the-national-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transcript<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: Chocolate, you are pardoned. You are pardoned. He said, \u201cYou had to tell me that?\u201d (Applause.) Yeah. Yeah, you are. Yeah. I\u2019m serious. <\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know, man. You didn\u2019t have to pardon me. I knew I was pardoned.\u201d (Laughter.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But watch the turkey\u2019s reaction to being touched by the POTUS. His feathers fluff up and he gets puffy:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Biden: &#8220;Chocolate, you are pardoned. You are pardoned. He says &#8216;You have to tell me that?&#8217; Yeah. Yeah, you are. Yeah, I&#8217;m serious.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d2iYHMkg8k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/d2iYHMkg8k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller\/status\/1594736861238493188?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The first thing I did was Google \u201cwhy do turkeys ruffle their feathers?\u201d Because I know when cats arch their backs and their fur sort of \u201csprings out,\u201d it\u2019s a defensive gesture meant to ward off anything or anyone they see as a threat.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, turkeys <a href=\"https:\/\/petkeen.com\/why-do-turkeys-puff-up\/end%20against%20predators.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exhibit similar behavior<\/a> when they feel threatened, although getting puffy and fluffing their feathers can also be a sign of a mating call of sorts. LOL:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Because \u201cstrutting\u201d is the term used to describe the behavior of a turkey puffing its feathers. This is what makes this bird go from bland to grand.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, turkeys exhibit this fascinating behavior to attract mates, show their dominance, or defend against predators.<\/p>\n[\u2026]\n<p>Females or males inflate their plumage to intimidate a predator threatening their brood. So, whenever turkeys sense a threat, be it human or animal, they can use this behavior to show the predator that it is likely to go wrong if it decides to attack!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like \u201cChocolate\u201d is a good judge of character, don\u2019t you think? \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Biden\u2019s awkward \u201cexchange\u201d with the turkey wasn\u2019t the only cringe moment during the ceremony. He also talked to the turkey farmer and tried to make a joke about countries he\u2019s been to, presumably referencing Turkey in the \u201cjoke\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: How many turkeys have you got down there \u2014 are you raising?<\/p>\n<p>MR. PARKER: Circle S Ranch grows about nine and half million turkeys a year.<\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: God love you. Nine and a half million turkeys. I tell you what. That\u2019s like some of the countries I\u2019ve been to. (Laughter.) And the \u2014 anyway.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He\u2019s just so danged bad at this. Even simple events, he messes them up.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, let\u2019s hope that his and First Lady Jill Biden\u2019s visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcnc.com\/article\/news\/politics\/president-joe-biden-friendsgiving-cherry-point-marine-corps-air-station-2022\/275-de0f9168-1b6c-4319-aae3-e9ab16cdfb4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later in the day<\/a> to Cherry Point, North Carolina \u2013 where they reportedly will be serving turkey to the troops and their families \u2013 goes off better than the pardoning did.
