The snapshot, widely circulated online, appears to show the 71-year-old musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/protest\">sitting<\/a> while most of the other adults in the section stood with their hands over their hearts during \u201cThe Star Spangled Banner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMellencamp is one of America\u2019s Greatest Frauds\u2026always has been,\u201d Dakich said in the tweet caption.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mellencamp is one of America\u2019s Greatest Frauds\u2026always has been <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Bhjpfll97b\">https:\/\/t.co\/Bhjpfll97b<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dan Dakich (@dandakich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dandakich\/status\/1594489180742115328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rock star is well known for supporting former San Francisco 49ers quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick, who helped spearhead the campaign to have players kneel during the national anthem in seasons past as a form of protest.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Mellencamp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rock\/late-show-colbert-john-mellancamp-performance-kneel-8097880\/\">appeared<\/a> on the \u201cLate Show with Stephen Colbert\u201d and took a knee while raising his fist in the air after performing the song \u201cEasy Target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sarcastic song includes lyrics that refer to black people being \u201ccreated equal, equally beneath me and you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking the knee started purely and simply as a protest of racial and social injustice,\u201d Mellencamp told the Associated Press in 2018. \u201cSadly, it was politicized by the [Trump] administration. The song is simple and the protest is pure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mellencamp has long been a liberal, lending campaign songs to Democrat Hillary Clinton and insisting Republican John McCain had to stop using his music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the recording artist released \u201cA Pawn in the White Man\u2019s Game\u201d on his website and YouTube. The track was a remake of the 1964 Bob Dylan song \u201cOnly a Pawn in Their Game,\u201d which commemorated the killing of civil rights activist Medgar Evers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mellencamp\u2019s redo included lyrics focusing on racial conflicts stemming from the death of George Floyd in police custody. YouTube later removed the music video for violating community guidelines as it featured footage of violent altercations between protestors and police from over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cJack &#038; Diane\u201d singer released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theq.fm\/2020\/08\/30\/john-mellencamp-updates-a-1964-bob-dylan-protest-song-for-modern-times\/\">statement<\/a> at the time, saying, \u201cFor my entire life I have seen the mistreatment of minorities in our country. We have gone too far with the shameful killing and genocide\u2026from the Native Americans to where we find ourselves today.
