While keeping science in full view, \u201cGood Night Oppy,\u201d a documentary rolling out Nov. 23 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Good-Night-Oppy-Ryan-White\/dp\/B0B8JR3XT8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Video<\/a>, tells an inspirational story as it chronicles recent scientific breakthroughs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt NASA, you don\u2019t have a lot of time to grieve the end of a mission, and you move on very fast,\u201d said director Ryan White in a phone interview. \u201cWhen you speak with these people, there was a catharsis happening.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When NASA launched Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity in July 2003, engineers expected the robots to last 90 days. Instead, they lasted much longer \u2014 with Opportunity\u2019s mission going for 15 whole years, capturing never-before-seen footage of the red planet despite massive dust storms and treacherous craters.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>One actively working NASA research scientist, Abigail Fraeman, said their team of experts recognizes there\u2019s only so much science one can effectively cram into a feature film. White\u2019s emotion-driven approach serves \u201cto tell a story that\u2019s going to be resonant with the greatest number of people \u2014 and, I hope, inspire them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The director and his team culled through more than 1,000 hours of archive footage, mostly shot by documentarian <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonhassle.com\/interview-good-night-oppy-director-ryan-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Beck-Hofmann<\/a>, who is co-credited as cinematographer on this film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the secret sauce of \u201cGood Night Oppy\u201d also multiplied its budget beyond a typical documentary: engaging VFX artists at Industrial Light &#038; Film (ILM) to recreate the rovers\u2019 Mars journey, including their landing and other dramatic scenes on the red planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took all the real images the rover collected, then turned them into these amazing worlds,\u201d said scientist Fraeman, who is briefly seen in the movie. \u201cIt was really incredible to see the detail that filmmakers put into trying to make this realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through new interviews and archive footage, the perspective of Mars Exploration Rover Project leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Roving-Mars-Spirit-Opportunity-Exploration\/dp\/1401308511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Squyres<\/a> and other dedicated astronomers begins to rub off on viewers. And it\u2019s clear they regard these robots not as machines but as friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> The Little Robot that Could <\/p>\n<p>The storytelling angle of attributing human characteristics to a robot isn\u2019t covert \u2014 after all, the title features the robot\u2019s nickname, \u201cOppy,\u201d and Amblin Entertainment\u2019s \u201cE.T.\u201d logo is on the poster.<\/p>\n<p>White contends the film is committed to accurately recounting events. The film notes that rovers were built to stand the average human height of 5 feet and 2 inches, with cameras positioned to look like eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mantra in the editing room was, \u2018We can\u2019t anthropomorphize the robots any more than these human beings are willing to,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cYou would think scientists and engineers would be the exact types of personalities never to do that. But in all of our sit-downs with NASA staff, each one felt an affection for this robot that was undeniable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, an opening sequence veers slightly into science fiction, according to Fraeman.
