Following the incident, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/government-entity-that-seized-ftx-crypto-assets-steps-forward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billions<\/a> of customers\u2019 dollars may have been stolen, the life of Bankman-Fried has come under scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Fried, the mother of Bankman-Fried, is a law professor at Stanford University who has <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/directory\/barbara-fried\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written<\/a> about \u201cquestions of distributive justice\u201d in areas such as tax policy and political theory. She also runs a political action committee called Mind the Gap, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/mind-the-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraises<\/a> for the Democratic Party among executives in Silicon Valley. The organization raised nearly $4 million in the most recent midterm election cycle, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/mind-the-gap\/C00683649\/summary\/2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from Open Secrets, which showed that FTX Director of Engineering Nishad Singh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outside-spending\/detail\/2022?cmte=C00683649&#038;tab=donors_all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made<\/a> a $1 million contribution.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt have also backed the organization, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/1\/6\/21046631\/mind-the-gap-silicon-valley-democratic-donors-stanford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Vox, which described one of the entity\u2019s purposes as avoiding \u201cpublic detection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried himself contributed nearly $39 million to various campaigns during the recent midterm elections, with 99.6% of funds benefiting Democratic candidates, according to more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outside-spending\/top_donors\/2022?disp=D&#038;type=V&#038;superonly=N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from Open Secrets, which listed him as the nation\u2019s sixth-largest individual midterm donor. He was previously the second-largest contributor to President Joe Biden amid his successful bid for the White House.<\/p>\n<p>In the days since FTX imploded, a 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonreview.net\/forum\/barbara-fried-beyond-blame-moral-responsibility-philosophy-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> penned by Fried in the Boston Review claiming that the notion of personal responsibility has \u201cruined criminal justice and economic policy\u201d began circulating online. \u201cPublic reactions to wrongdoing have been studied most extensively in the context of crime,\u201d she asserted. \u201cResearchers have found that peoples\u2019 evaluations of serious wrongfulness vary significantly across social conditions and individuals. Tellingly, the more information people have about the context of the crime, the person who committed it, and the circumstances he or she came from, the more nuanced are their views of moral responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fried said that harm reduction policies are meant to \u201creduce future harm at a tolerable cost to all of us, wrongdoers included, by influencing wrongdoers\u2019 future choices through rehabilitation, more carefully calibrated deterrence, and, when necessary, isolation from society.\u201d She nevertheless insisted that her views do not \u201ccoddle criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether Bankman-Fried himself will spend time in prison has yet to be determined. The former billionaire is presently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bahamas-may-ship-disgraced-crypto-ceo-sam-bankman-fried-back-to-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">located<\/a> in the Bahamas under supervision from law enforcement, who may transfer him to the United States for bankruptcy proceedings and questions from policymakers. The two nations signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/94-922-Bahamas-Extradition-Treaty.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extradition treaty<\/a> in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Bankman, the father of Bankman-Fried, also <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/directory\/joseph-bankman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">works<\/a> as a law professor at Stanford University and has drafted legislation for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), one of the most ardent skeptics of cryptocurrency in the federal government, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/crypto\/2022\/11\/11\/sbfs-disgrace-could-make-things-awkward-for-gary-gensler-and-the-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Fortune.
