When Raven-Symon\u00e9, who says she\u2019s non-binary and is married to another woman, was approached to be part of a reboot, she said producers suggested her character could also be gay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Disney wanted her to be queer in the beginning, and I just didn\u2019t feel comfortable doing that,\u201d she told the magazine Them in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/raven-symone-them-youtube-becoming-cheetah-girls-queerness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cThey were like, \u2018Do you want Raven to be gay?\u2019 I said, \u2018Why?\u2019 [And they said,] \u2018Because you are.\u2019 I said, \u2018Bad, bad reason. That\u2019s a bad reason.\u2019 No, Raven Baxter never exhibited any type of sexual identity situation in the priors. I\u2019m not being myself on this show; I\u2019m being a character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaven\u2019s Home\u201d follows the titular character as she raises her two children following a divorce. Symone shut down any notion of a romantic relationship between Raven and her best friend Chelsea (Anneliese van der Pol), who helps with the kids and lives in the same house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaven Baxter\u2019s not gay. No matter what the first four seasons looked like, with me and Chelsea sleeping in the same room and us raising a family together,\u201d Raven-Symon\u00e9 continued. \u201cOK, that\u2019s not the case. We are friends. Who sleep in the same room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just that the \u201cCosby Show\u201d alum doesn\u2019t want her character to be gay \u2013 she doesn\u2019t think Raven should be dating at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so funny because we\u2019re working on the sixth season now, and I\u2019m talking to the EPs and they\u2019re like, \u2018And you\u2019re gonna start dating?\u2019\u201d she told the publication. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018She don\u2019t need to date either. She\u2019s just going to be nothing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former child star previously expressed surprise that Disney would hire her even though she\u2019s openly a member of the LGBTQ community. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised they chose me! I was like, \u2018I came out, I said all kinds of stuff . . . Look at y\u2019all!\u2019 Thank you Disney for understanding I\u2019m a human,\u201d she told Hollywood Life during a podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.libsyn.com\/raven-symone-talks-ravens-home-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, yeah, I was pleasantly surprised, but again, as we grow and as the network grows and as humanity grows, the kids are getting smarter and smarter! You can\u2019t lie to them.
