He said that investigators had enough evidence to come to the conclusion that the crash was intentional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were able to form the opinion that this was a deliberate act,\u201d Villanueva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JDbPo1MtOlI\">said<\/a>. \u201cThat is the conclusion we\u2019ve arrived [at].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like they arrested the wrong suspect,\u201d Deputy Deanna Mares told CNN. \u201cThey just want to make sure the investigation is going to be complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred about 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles around 6:30 a.m. during a training exercise with about 75 recruits from the Sheriff\u2019s Department and several local police agencies. The recruits were part of a 22-week program with the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s S.T.A.R.S. Explorer Training Academy in South Whittier, California.<\/p>\n<p>Initial reports suggested that the 22-year-old driver traveled the wrong way when the collision occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-11-17\/investigation-into-whittier-crash-continues\">reported<\/a> Gutierrez had marijuana in the vehicle at the time of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva confirmed in a press conference reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/16\/us\/la-sheriff-recruits-whittier-crash.html\">The New York Times<\/a> that the driver, who only suffered minor injuries, had passed a field sobriety test.<\/p>\n<p>According to Villanueva, seven recruits remain in the hospital, with two in critical condition and multiple leg fractures. He said authorities\u2019 biggest concern is one of the recruits is on life support and suffering from serious brain bleeding and swelling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have a long road to recovery happen to them, and we\u2019re just hoping and praying that they can pull through,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/west\/suspect-arrested-in-crash-that-injured-25-law-enforcement-recruits\/\">News Nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva said that five recruits are still under observation, and the remaining 20 have been released to their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a bedlam, chaos, you know, there were bodies everywhere, bones sticking out and bleeding profusely. It was a pretty traumatic scene,\u201d Villanueva said. \u201cIn fact, the paramedics that were there had never seen something of that scale. It was almost like an airplane accident, but everyone was alive, thankfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KTLA reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/wrong-way-driver-who-hit-recruits-had-marijuana-in-his-vehicle-report\/\">confronted<\/a> Gutierrez on Thursday night when he returned home after authorities released him.
