The suspected shooter is UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. Upon arrival at the scene, university police encountered several victims of gunshot wounds. The shootings occurred on a bus full of students returning from a field trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-block full\">\n<div class=\"video-player youtube\">[embedded content]<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He then detailed the identities of the three murder victims, \u201cThree of the victims did not survive. They were Devin Chandler, a second year from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Lavell Davis a third year\u00a0 student from Ridgeville, South Carolina, and D\u2019Sean Perry, a fourth year student from Miami, Florida. All three were members of the football team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo other students were wounded and are being treated for injuries at the UVA Medical Center. One is in good condition. One is in critical condition. In order to protect their privacy, we are not releasing their names at this moment,\u201d Ryan continued.<\/p>\n<p>The names of the two other victims have since been revealed. They are football player Michael Hollins and student Marlee Morgan.<\/p>\n<p>According to University of Virginia police chief Tim Longo, Jones was charged \u201cwith three counts of second-degree murder. His statement shared to Twitter begins, \u201cMy heart and condolences go out to the University of Virginia community and all the families who have been affected by Sunday night\u2019s tragedy. What happened at my alma mater not only saddens me, but once again reaffirms how much work must be done to rid our society of gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWith yet another senseless shooting, we lost some great young men in the making \u2014 young men with futures, young men who have the ability and desire to create positive change in today\u2019s world. But the answer is not outlawing firearms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sites\/default\/files\/flipbooks\/catechism\/547\/#zoom=z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/a> teaches, \u201cLove toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one\u2019s own right to life Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It further teaches, \u201cLegitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm.
