Held even years since its 1996 debut (with 2020\u2019s event taking place last year due to the global novel coronavirus pandemic), it is the largest aviation and aerospace trade exhibition.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Attendees at this year\u2019s event in Zhuhai, Guangdong \u2013 which concluded on Sunday \u2013 saw a ground display of the Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/11\/the-world-responds-china-and-the-u-s-are-racing-to-build-a-ngad-6th-generation-fighter\/\">concept<\/a> of China\u2019s sixth-generation fighter aircraft.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>What wasn\u2019t seen might be as notable.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Is the J-35? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>The J-35 \u2013 a reported third variant of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/chinas-fc-31-stealth-fighter-just-a-bad-copy-of-the-f-35\/\"><span> Shenyang FC-31<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 was a no-show, despite some early speculation that the carrier-based aircraft could make an appearance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is reportedly being developed for the People\u2019s Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF) and the People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>The first media confirmation of the J-35 first circulated in June 2020 \u2013 which claimed that it was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2021\/10\/29\/j-35-first-flight\/\"><span>\u00a0\u201cproduction-ready\u201d version<\/span><\/a><span> that featured smoother lines, had a larger radome for bigger radar, and a closer alignment of control surfaces to reduce its radar signature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The twin-engine fighter was developed to be operated by the PLANAF from China\u2019s future Type 003 Fujian-class aircraft carriers. It would be capable of operating with the carrier\u2019s electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (ALS). Given that the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/06\/17\/china-third-fujian-aircraft-carrier\/\"><span> carrier was launched this summer<\/span><\/a><span>, and is expected to begin sea trials by the end of next year, it would seem that Beijing would begin highlighting the aircraft sooner than later.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Yet, the J-35 had only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42920\/chinas-carrier-capable-stealth-fighter-has-flown\"><span> made its maiden flight last year<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>J-35: Images on Social Media<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>It was this past July that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/f-35-clone-new-images-of-chinas-j-35-stealth-fighter-are-out\/\"><span> images of the future carrier-borne stealth fighter<\/span><\/a><span> circulated on the Chinese social media app Weibo. The high-resolution photos were the most detailed ones of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/our-best-look-yet-at-chinas-j-35-carrier-capable-stealth-fighter\"><span> aircraft yet published online<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>It was hard not to see the influence the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2022\/07\/this-is-the-clearest-photo-yet-of-chinese-navys-j-35-fighter\/\"><span> may have played<\/span><\/a><span> in the development of the J-35 \u2013 beyond its \u201cmoniker.\u201d <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Though the Chinese do not appear to be developing a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant, the J-35 still utilizes a canopy design similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/11\/block-4-how-the-f-35-keeps-getting-better-and-deadlier\/\">Lightning II<\/a>, which was designed to accommodate the lift fan used in the STOVL model.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21869\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21869\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21869\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/J-35-1-1200x764-1.jpg\" alt=\"J-35\" width=\"880\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/J-35-1-1200x764-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/J-35-1-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/J-35-1-768x489-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/J-35-1.jpg 1244w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-21869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">J-35 vs. F-35 Comparison. Image by Twitter User RupprechtDeino.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>This shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/11\/chinas-navy-dream-a-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier\/\">China<\/a> has long copied \u2013 or reverse-engineered\/stolen \u2013 all sorts of foreign aircraft designs. Chinese hackers were famously believed to have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industrialcybersecuritypulse.com\/throwback-attack-chinese-hackers-steal-plans-for-the-f-35-fighter-in-a-supply-chain-heist\/\"><span> stolen multiple terabytes<\/span><\/a><span> worth of data related to the F-35 program, including information on the Lightning II\u2019s radar design \u2013 the number and types of modules used by the system \u2013 as well as its engine, including the method used for cooling gases, leading and trailing edge treatments, and aft deck heating contour maps.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<h3><strong>J-35 Or Something Else?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>The official designation of the new twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft isn\u2019t actually known, even as most open sources have called it \u201cJ-35\u201d or \u201cJ-XY.\u201d At the same time, some simply describe it as a carrier-based variant of the FC-31.
