Act,\u201d officially dubbed the\u00a0Individual Freedom Act. The judge\u2019s move\u00a0means that the law cannot be enforced on college campuses for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law officially bans professors from expressing disfavored viewpoints in university classrooms while permitting unfettered expression of the opposite viewpoints,\u201d Walker wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flnd.443792\/gov.uscourts.flnd.443792.44.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order<\/a>. \u201cDefendants argue that, under this Act, professors enjoy \u2018academic freedom\u2019 so long as they express only those viewpoints of which the State approves. This is positively dystopian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walker claimed that \u201cour professors are critical to a healthy democracy\u201d and referred to them as \u201cpriests of democracy\u201d who \u201cshed light on challenging ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christopher J. Scalia, the son of former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, responded to Walker\u2019s sentence referring to professors being the \u201cpriests of democracy\u201d by saying, \u201cThat whole sentence is embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to start getting rid of these repulsive judges \u2014 or giving them IQ tests,\u201d political commentator David Reaboi tweeted. \u201cThis clown is dumber than dirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happened to separation of church and state,\u201d attorney Will Chamberlain tweeted. \u201cIf professors are \u2018priests of democracy\u2019 then universities are churches, and must do without all government funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh yes, the American university, a flourishing marketplace of ideas,\u201d law professor Adrian Vermeule tweeted sarcastically. \u201c\u2018Priests of democracy\u2019 is correct, although not in the sense the judge intended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Signal\u2019s Jarrett Stepman tweeted, \u201c\u2018Priests of democracy.\u2019 The left actually wants to publicly fund religion, as long as it\u2019s their religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/7\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a>, which the Florida legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/florida-critical-race-theory-education-stop-woke-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> in March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/federal-judge-suspends-stop-woke-act-in-florida\">prohibits<\/a> public K-12 schools and universities from teaching eight concepts that constitute \u201cdiscrimination\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0lets parents sue if their children are taught those concepts. It also targets employers who require their workers to partake in woke trainings.<\/p>\n<p>The banned concepts include that a person is \u201cinherently\u201d racist or sexist \u201cwhether consciously or unconsciously\u201d due to his race or sex, that a person \u201cbears personal responsibility for and\u00a0must feel guilt\u201d for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, and that\u00a0virtues like hard work, fairness, objectivity, and racial colorblindness are racist.<\/p>\n<p>The act\u00a0enhances enforcement of the Florida education board\u2019s June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2021\/06\/10\/keep-critical-race-theory-out-of-schools-desantis-tells-state-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a> to ban public schools from teaching Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project, which reframes American history with slavery at the center.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis and Republican lawmakers have touted the law, saying it will prevent both students and employees in Florida from harmful, woke classes and trainings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida we are taking a stand against the state-sanctioned racism that is Critical Race Theory,\u201d\u00a0DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/12\/15\/governor-desantis-announces-legislative-proposal-to-stop-w-o-k-e-activism-and-critical-race-theory-in-schools-and-corporations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in December when announcing the bill.\u00a0\u201cWe won\u2019t allow Florida tax dollars to be spent teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis added at the time that Florida must protect workers against the \u201chostile work environment that is created when large corporations force their employees to endure CRT-inspired \u2018training\u2019 and indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 office said they \u201cstrongly disagree\u201d with Thursday\u2019s ruling and\u00a0plan to appeal it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recent ruling included several victories for our legal team. We expect many more and ultimately to prevail in this litigation,\u201d Bryan Griffin, press secretary for DeSantis\u2019 office, said in a statement to The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Stop W.O.K.E. Act protects the open exchange of ideas by prohibiting teachers or employers who hold agency over others from forcing discriminatory concepts on students as part of classroom instruction or on employees as a condition of maintaining employment.
