Losing their total control of Congress has them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/11\/03\/biden-world-lame-duck-debt-ceiling-2024-00064887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">itching to ram through<\/a> a myriad of reckless proposals and leave their mark on Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic leaders are already juggling several competing priorities for the lame-duck session, including efforts to pass a major defense bill, push through outstanding energy-permitting legislation, and vote on proposals redefining marriage in federal law and further changing the electoral process. Congress also needs to reach a government funding deal before its Dec. 16 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>To top it off, the left also wants to pass an increase in the debt limit lasting through the 2024 elections during the coming lame-duck session of Congress that will give the Biden administration a license to continue overspending.<\/p>\n<p> Misplaced Priorities <\/p>\n<p>Some of the items in the Democrat laundry list are not <em>per se<\/em> objectionable, so much as an illustration of the way in which they frittered away their time for most of the 117th Congress. For instance, had lawmakers not spent the better part of a year trying to pass the Biden administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2021-12\/57673-BBBA-GrahamSmith-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5 trillion<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/13\/republicans-should-force-democrats-to-vote-on-the-full-5-trillion-build-back-bankrupt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Build Back Bankrupt legislation<\/a>, they wouldn\u2019t have to rush through consideration of a major piece of legislation covering nearly $1 trillion in spending and the gamut of American foreign and defense policy right before the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>In other cases, the legislation Democrats want to pass doesn\u2019t include the robust reforms Americans need because it won\u2019t authorize the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/17\/fund-democrats-covid-slush-fund-in-exchange-for-developing-american-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploration necessary to bring down fuel prices<\/a> in a meaningful way for struggling families. As to codifying same-sex marriage, waiting until after the election to vote on such legislation was a convenient way for Republican lawmakers to avoid angering conservatives who believe in a biblical version of the institution.<\/p>\n<p> Uncontrolled Inflation and Unsustainable Debt <\/p>\n<p>Much of the debate surrounds the federal government\u2019s habit of overspending. Interest groups are already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospitals.org\/-\/media\/files\/public-policy\/mental_health\/letters\/2022\/110222_end_of_year_priorities_congress_letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lining up<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/politico-pulse\/2022\/11\/03\/the-health-policy-rand-paul-and-elizabeth-warren-agree-on-00064783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">request special favors<\/a> from lawmakers in the lame-duck session. They presume, not without reason <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/10\/with-inflation-at-its-highest-in-decades-congress-works-to-shovel-trillions-more-out-the-door-in-a-craptastic-omnibus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">based on historical precedent<\/a>, that Congress will wait until just before Christmas to pass another omnibus jam-packed with pork-barrel projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/14\/earmark-porkfest-in-omnibus-bill-demonstrates-washington-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earmarks<\/a>, and other provisions the lawmakers haven\u2019t read, let alone understand.<\/p>\n<p>Those same lobbyists and Democrat leaders want Congress to pass a multitrillion-dollar debt limit increase in that same measure. Doing so, they believe, would block any attempts by a Republican-controlled chamber of Congress to utilize the debt limit as a means to control Washington\u2019s reckless spending.<\/p>\n<p>That said, when it comes to the debt limit, some well-intentioned lawmakers calling for sizable reductions in the national debt may want to bite off more than they can chew. The combination of trillions of dollars in Covid spending over the past several years and sizable increases in interest rates makes reducing the national debt a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/03\/democrats-work-to-tax-and-spend-even-more-as-federal-debt-deficits-mushroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">much greater challenge<\/a> than in years past.
