Kiefel came to regret the double mastectomy she had in August 2020 in the years that followed, calling the procedure a result of an \u201cabhorrent misdiagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was 30 and at the end of my rope when I transitioned,\u201d Kiefel testified at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-florida-board-of-medicine-votes-to-ban-pediatric-gender-affirming-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hearing<\/a> on the efficacy of pediatric medical transition held by the Florida Boards of Medicine. \u201cAt the time I believed I was nonbinary, I struggled with severe mental illness and suicidal ideation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiefel is suing social worker Amy Ruff and mental health therapist Mara Burmeister, as well as their respective Portland-based gender clinics \u2014 Brave Space Oregon and the Quest Center for Integrative Health.<\/p>\n<p>After a 40-minute video call with Burmeister in July 2020, following a one-hour Zoom session with Ruff in May, both \u201cexperts\u201d wrote a letter of recommendation for Kiefel to undergo chest reconstruction surgery, the complaint reads.<\/p>\n<p>The 13 page complaint alleges that the defendants \u201ctransgressed the bounds of socially tolerable conduct by abusing their positions of trust and authority\u201d by facilitating \u201cunnecessary, irreversible treatment\u201d without consideration of Kiefel\u2019s mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Kiefel told The Daily Wire that after a traumatic childhood event, she felt discomfort with her breasts and hips, and began to dress androgynously as \u201ca form of escapism,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a trauma history: when I was in sixth grade my best friend had been raped by her brother,\u201d Kiefel <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RWVxsZf7ntw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the Florida Board of Medicine meeting. \u201cBeing a girl meant I was more vulnerable, so I started to present as more masculine. This should have been a red flag, yet within months of requesting top surgery, it was performed on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiefel was introduced to gender identity ideology in 2010, while she pursued a women\u2019s studies minor in college, and in 2016, began to identify as \u201cnonbinary\u201d after seeing a \u201cgender-affirming\u201d therapist. She spent much of her childhood suffering from anxiety and depression, which persisted into adulthood and led to suicidal ideation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, she began to feel that having her breasts removed would eliminate her mental and emotional distress. The request was granted in just a few months time after making the initial inquiry, despite the fact that she never took testosterone or believed herself to be transgender.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint states that even though Kiefel\u2019s desire for chest reconstruction was \u201cbased on \u2018individual identity\u2019 described as \u2018Absence of femininity\u2019 and desire for a \u2018more androgynous\u2019 look,\u201d her care team proceeded with the \u201clife-altering, physically damaging, irreversible\u201d operation.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint alleges that Burmeister \u201cfailed to conduct an individualized, comprehensive mental health assessment\u201d and ought to have known Kiefel was a \u201chigh-risk candidate for regretting or not benefitting from undergoing a double mastectomy for the purpose of \u2018gender affirmation.\u2019\u201d Additionally, Burmeister\u2019s referral letter was \u201cbased on cut-and-pasted boilerplate diagnostic criteria\u201d that failed to account for Kiefel\u2019s individual needs.<\/p>\n<p>Defendant Ruff \u201cbreached her duty of care\u201d by violating the standards of care applicable to Licensed Clinical Social Workers in the State of Oregon, failing to provide Kiefel with \u201caccurate, complete information about the risks of having a double mastectomy ostensibly to relieve or alleviate mental health or emotional distress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiefel found the inspiration for a \u201cnonbinary top surgery\u201d when she came across the Gender Confirmation Center (GCC) website, which she claimed to believe was a \u201clegitimate\u201d source of information at the time. The founder of GCC, Dr. Scott Mosser, has performed \u201cover two thousand top surgeries\u201d on girls and women, including several 13 year olds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/there-is-no-youngest-age-at-all-california-doctor-admits-to-performing-affirming-surgeries-on-transgender-children-as-young-as-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to a leaked video in August.<\/p>\n<p>Kiefel says that since she started putting more emphasis on taking care of her physical health, the anxiety and depression that led to her rejection of womanhood resolved. Now she is left with feeling distress over her body after her double mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>In the complaint, filed with Oregon State Courts, Kiefel details her anguish \u201cliving with a permanently scarred, disfigured, and physically painful or discomfiting chest, and deep feelings of regret over unnecessarily and permanently losing her choice ever to breastfeed a child.\u201d She now has fears and anxiety over finding a life partner that will be \u201csexually and romantically attracted to a woman without breasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of her mistreatment, she feels deeply distrustful of western medicine. \u201cI don\u2019t really want anything to do with conventional doctors anymore after my experiences,\u201d said Kiefel, who as of late has gravitated towards alternative medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Kiefel recalled how, even with a diagnosis of ADHD, she had to \u201cjump through hoops\u201d to get her stimulant medication because it\u2019s a controlled substance with safeguarding in place \u201cto<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A detransitioner is suing a social worker, therapist, and their respective clinics in Oregon for overlooking her mental health challenges and fast-tracking her \u201cnon-binary\u201d double mastectomy surgery.
